Charger Women's Tennis Team Defeats SVSU in Season Opener

Box Score

The spring season of 2016 ended with a one-sided loss to Saginaw Valley State for the Hillsdale College women's tennis team.

Payback occured Sunday in the 2017-18 season opener.

Thanks in part to a three-set win by sophomore Kamryn Matthews at No. 6 singles, the Chargers opened the new year with a 5-4 win over Saginaw Valley State at the Mary Jane Delp Courts on the campus of Hillsdale College.

Matthews' match was the last to be completed and was the only three-set match out of the six singles flights. She won the first set 7-5, but was shut out in set number two 6-0. But Matthews rebounded impressively with a 6-3 win in set three to secure not only the individual win for herself, but a big win for her team.

Hillsdale won two of the three doubles matches, highlighted by an 8-1 win by the powerful duo of junior Corinne Prost and sophomore Katie Bell. Junior Halle Hyman teamed up with talented freshman Hannah Cimpeanu to post an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to put Hillsdale on top.

Bell won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Cimpeanu won her singles collegiate debut, 7-6, 6-3.

Due to its move to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, the Chargers' primary season will now be in the spring. The Chargers will compete in a small number of events through the fall, highlighted by an ITA Regional event in Indianapolis Sept. 22-23.
