Women's Basketball Team Falls in First Game in Florida

Box Score

A second-quarter scoreless drought proved too much for the Hillsdale College women's basketball team against another nationally ranked opponent.

The Chargers fell to University of Sciences 75-60 Friday afternoon in a Thanksgiving Weekend game held at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Hillsdale stands at 0-4 on the season.

The Devils went on a 14-0 run to end the second quarter to extend what had been a two-point contest early in that quarter. Sciences was 12-for-29 from 3-point land, and many of its threes seemed to come at times when it was able to extend a run or stop a Chargers run from making the game much closer.

Some good things happened in the second half for Hillsdale, who outscored the Devils 35-34 over the game's final 20 minutes. Freshman guard Grace Touchette set a career-high in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 18 points, going 6-for-10 from the floor in 30 minutes of action. She made three 3-point baskets, and her development has been a very bright sign for the team in this opening month of the season.

Freshman Lauren Daffenberg scored 9 points off the bench, and senior Brittany Gray scored 8. Sophomore guard Jaycie Burger had 6 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Sciences held Hillsdale to 36 percent shooting from the floor and committed six fewer turnovers in the game (15-9).
