In six years in the GLIAC, the Hillsdale College women's tennis team had never beaten Ferris State.
Now, in its first year out of the GLIAC, the Chargers broke the streak Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers stepped up their game to impressive levels in picking up an 8-1 victory over the Bulldogs in Big Rapids. The win makes Hillsdale 2-2 on the season.
Over the years, Hillsdale has lost a lot of frustratingly close matches with the Bulldogs. But there wasn't a whole lot very close about Saturday's matchup, which featured a rare accomplishment from sophomore Kamryn Matthews.
In her singles and doubles matches, Matthews didn't drop a single set in picking up an 8-0 win with Madeline Bissett at No. 3 singles before winning a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 5 singles.
She was just one of several players who played at a high level for the Chargers. Bissett nearly duplicated Matthews' shut out performance with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Junior Corinne Prost was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 4 singles, and junior Halle Hyman was a straight-sets winner, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Hannah Cimpeanu, the reigning G-MAC Player of the Week, earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Earlier in the match, Cimpeanu and Hyman worked their way to an 8-4 victory.
