Chargers add deep class of four prospects to squad on signing day

Box Score

Strong recruiting is the lifeblood of any successful college basketball program.

And based on the talent in this year's signing day crop, it looks like the Hillsdale College men's basketball program is on track to continue its success for years to come.

Fresh off a 2021 NCAA DII Elite Eight berth, the Chargers are adding four players this coming fall with great talent, athleticism, size and versatility to an already strong roster.

Logan Beaston [Tiffin Columbian (OH) HS], Caleb Glaser [Appleton East (WI) HS], Mikey McCollum [Olentangy Orange (OH) HS] and Connor Stonebraker [Versailles (OH) HS] can all potentially play multiple positions and will give Hillsdale head coach John Tharp plenty of options to work with in future years.

"We're really excited about the potential this class represents," Tharp said. "When you look at this group, we're getting four players who really understand the game of basketball and can score at a high level.

"Just as important, we're getting four guys with great competitive spirit, a drive to get better and high character, who are going to fit in perfectly to the culture of our program. This group really has the chance to be the backbone of our program in a couple years as they develop and continue to improve."

Beaston is a guard prospect and one of the top preps players in Northwest Ohio, the 2021-22 Sandusky Bay Conference player of the year who's led Tiffin Columbian to back-to-back 19-win seasons and district final appearances in the always-tough OHSAA Division II classification.

The 6-foot-5 wing player averaged 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals last season while earning first-team All-Northwest Ohio and All-District VI honors, as well as special mention All-Ohio honors in Division II.

Glaser is a 6-foot-8 forward with both size and skill who's been a difference-maker for Appleton East in the Eau Claire area of Wisconsin. Over three seasons with the Patriots on the varsity, Glaser has helped turn a five-win squad into a 23-win team that reached the WIAA Division I regional finals for the first time in over a decade this past fall.

Glaser played a big role in that emergence, averaging 17 points, five rebounds and two assists, while earning first-team All-Fox Valley Association honors, as well as honorable mention All-Wisconsin Division 1 recognition.

McCollum is the latest addition to the class and a welcome one as a versatile guard prospect who's stood out for an Olentangy Orange team playing in the highest classification in the state of Ohio and in the stacked Columbus area.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 13 points, four rebounds and two assists while helping lead the Pioneers to back-to-back appearances in the OHSAA Division 1 district round, earning first-team All-District honors and second-team All-Ohio Capital Conference Central Division honors as well.

Stonebraker is a rugged 6-foot-7 post presence from Versailles, Ohio, who averaged a 15-point, 10 rebound double-double while leading the Tigers to 22 wins and a OHSAA Division III district final appearance in 2021-22.

Last year's Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Stonebraker also earned first-team All-Southwest Ohio and first-team All-District honors while also making the All-Ohio third team in Division III for his play last season.

The Hillsdale College men's basketball team is 2-0 in the 2022-23 season, and takes on Wayne State in its home opener tonight at 7 p.m. as the Chargers look for another successful campaign this winter before welcoming these four newcomers this fall.
