Chargers pull out 5-2 victory over Cedarville for fourth-straight G-MAC win

The Hillsdale College women's tennis team extended its winning streak in G-MAC play to four straight and moved a step closer to locking up a top four seed in the upcoming G-MAC Tournament with a 5-2 victory over visiting Cedarville on Friday.

The Chargers seized control of the match early with a dominant performance to take the doubles point. Hillsdale's No. 1 singles pairing of Sarah Hackman and Melanie Zampardo, and the Chargers' No. 2 doubles pairing of Ellie Chawner and Libby McGivern each won 6-1, while Hillsdale's No. 3 doubles pairing of Isabella Spinazze and Julia Wagner rolled to a 6-2 victory to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead.

With that edge, Hillsdale quickly clinched the match with straight-set wins in the top four singles flights. Hackman made quick work of Cedarville's Abby Totten in a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while her partner, Zampardo, overcame a slow start to win a first-set tiebreak, 7-2, and take a 7-6, 6-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets' Payton Krahn at No. 2 singles.

Hillsdale's Canela Luna won a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cedarville's Calista Bobula at No. 3 singles as well, while McGivern took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles over Faith Monson to help clinch the match.

With the win, Hillsdale gets back to .500 at 7-7 overall, and is now 4-1 in G-MAC play heading into another crucial home match against Ashland at noon tomorrow, Saturday. A win over the Eagles would set up a final match against Northwood next Saturday, April 15, with the third seed in the upcoming G-MAC Tournament on the line.
