The Hillsdale College men's track and field team split its squad to compete in multiple locations this weekend, finding success both at Grand Valley State's Bill Clinger Classic on Friday and its own home invitational, the Wide Track Classic, on Saturday.
A small group of athletes made the journey to Allendale on Friday for the Chargers, and the best finish of the day belonged to senior
Cass Dobrowolski, who placed fourth in a field that included five of the top 10 best high jumpers currently in NCAA DII with a clearance of 2.09 meters. That mark was a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark, but not an improvement on his school record clearance of 2.20 meters from earlier in the season.
The next day, at Hillsdale's Wide Track Classic, junior
Ben Haas won the shot put for the Chargers with a big time throw of 17.64 meters, improving his NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark and moving into ninth place in NCAA DII currently in the event. Haas also took second in the weight throw with a mark of 19.35 meters, also a provisional qualifying mark but not an improvement on his NCAA DII best mark of 22.12 meters from earlier in the season.
A handful of other Chargers had strong days at the Wide Track Classic. Senior
Jamahl Burke won the 400m dash in a strong race, finishing in 49.66, while the Chargers placed two in the top five in the 800m run, with freshman
Zach Self taking third in 1:59.89 and
Zealand Tarrant placing fourth in 2:00.21.
Connor McCormick placed fourth in the pole vault (4.66 meters) as well for Hillsdale, and
Daniel Johnson took fifth in the mile run (4:28.75).
Hillsdale will compete again in two meets next weekend, as the Chargers send a contingent to the Akron Invitational in Ohio, while the bulk of the squad travels north to the Jet's Pizza Invite hosted by Saginaw Valley State.
