The Hillsdale College volleyball team gave a tough fight in two of the three sets on its home court, but ultimately didn't have the firepower offensively to keep pace with 25th-ranked Findlay in a 15-25, 17-25, 22-25 sweep on Friday night.
Trailing 1-0 after a strong first set performance from the Oilers, Hillsdale played well in set two, taking a 17-14 lead on four kills from
Jenna Southland and three each from
Ellie Fles and
Emory Braswell, but Findlay got on a roll late, scoring the final 11 points of the set to overturn the deficit and go up 2-0 on the match.
Backs to the wall in set three, Hillsdale played its most consistent set yet, leading for large chunks, going up by as many as four points, and holding a 21-18 lead just four points away from forcing a fourth set and staying alive in the match. Once again, however, Findlay took control late, scoring seven of the final eight points to close out the match.
Ultimately, the Oilers' edge on the attack was too much to overcome, as Findlay hit .313 to Hillsdale's .148 and had 46 kills to Hillsdale's 33. Much of the Oilers' success came late in sets on extended service runs, with Jenna Leugers twice leading the Oilers on big rallies to take both sets two and three.
Southland led Hillsdale at the net with eight kills and four total blocks, hitting .500 on the night in a solid offensive performance, while Braswell chipped in seven kills and Fles added seven kills and seven digs.
Libero
Ella Byrum finished with 15 digs to lead the Chargers defensively, while
Madison Peal chipped in nine digs and two aces and
Chloe Pierce added eight digs.
Josie TeSlaa added 16 assists for the Chargers, splitting the setting duties with
Grace Drake who chipped in 13 assists.
Hillsdale (5-7, 3-3 G-MAC) will look to bounce back tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a match against Tiffin at home. It's the Chargers' final match before the Midwest Regional Crossover next week and an important one for Hillsdale to get back above. 500 in conference play and secure good matchups in that event.
