Chargers Crowned High Overall Team at Upper Midwest Conference Championship

The 2025 ACUI/SCTP Upper Midwest Conference Championship took place at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH from October 3-5. Over 70 athletes were in attendance competing in 50 each of Trap Doubles, Skeet Doubles, and Super Sporting plus 100 each of American Trap, American Skeet, and Sporting Clays.

The first day of competition, the Chargers shot both Skeet Doubles and Super Sporting. They took 1st place team (239/250) anchored by a perfect 50/50 performance from senior Kyle Fleck who earned the gold medal in the men's category. Senior Davis Hay and junior Luke Johnson both hit 48 targets while junior Madeline Corbin (47) and freshman Zach Hinze (46) rounded out the team score. Corbin was the highest score of all the women in attendance. 2nd and 3rd place team went to Bethel University and Clemson University respectively.

Hillsdale also earned 1st place team in Super Sporting after a phenomenal 246/250 team score, edging out Liberty University and Clemson University in 2nd and 3rd. Hay hit all 50 targets and earned men's 2nd place after a shootoff. Four Chargers broke 49 targets: Corbin, Johnson, senior Leif Andersen, and freshman Henrik Kiledal. Corbin again shot the top lady's score.

Day 2 included American Skeet and Sporting Clays. A trio of Chargers hit 98/100 targets in Skeet: Hinze, Fleck, and sophomore Taylor Dale. Corbin and sophomore Marin McKinney both broke 97 targets. Hinze earned the men's silver for his performance after a shootoff and Dale, Corbin, and McKinney swept the women's podium in that order. This squad finished 1st in the discipline ahead of Bethel and Clemson.

Missing the top score by just 2 targets, the Chargers brought home 2nd place team in Sporting Clays behind Bethel and ahead of Liberty. Andersen had Hillsdale's best score of 88 out of 100 on a challenging course. He was 1 target behind the men's 3rd place finisher. Rounding out the team score were Corbin (87, 1st place Women's), Hinze (85), Fleck (84), and Johnson (81).

Sunday was Trap day featuring both Singles and Doubles. Andersen (99), Hay (98), Corbin (98), freshman Roman Barrett (98), and McKinney (97) put together a 2nd place team finish in American Single Trap for Hillsdale between Bethel and Clemson. Corbin, McKinney, and Dale swept the women's podium respectively while Andersen earned 2nd in the men's category after a shootoff.

Trap Doubles was another 1st place Team finish for the Chargers. Breaking 241 out of 250 targets, they finished ahead of 2nd place Bethel and 3rd place Liberty. Andersen and Johnson finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the men's category with scores of 50 and 49. Barrett (48) and Hay (47) also contributed to the team total. Sophomore Lucci Kern's 47 was the top women's score in the discipline with McKinney (46) and Dale (45) were 2nd and 3rd.

When the dust settled, Hillsdale finished first place High Overall Team with a total score of 2129/2250. Bethel earned 2nd and Clemson took 3rd. Hillsdale swept another Women's podium, this time for High Overall, with Corbin, Dale, and McKinney earning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. Andersen was the Chargers' highest individual finisher and earned 3rd men's HOA.

"This event is always a great opportunity for us to warm up and refocus for future intercollegiate shoots. We did well overall, had quite a few personal bests, but there is always room for improvement," said head coach Jordan Hintz. "I'm really excited to see what great things this team will continue to do the rest of the year."

The Chargers travel next to the ACUI/SCTP Fall Central Midwest Conference Championship in Sparta, IL. They will shoot at the World Sporting and Recreation Complex from October 10-12.
