Scouting the Opposition
Quincy: The Hawks are the host of the annual Hansen-Spear Classic as Hillsdale dips out of conference play for two contests in southern Illinois this week.

Quincy is in its second year under head coach Brad Hoyt, who took over the Hawks after a long and successful tenure at John Wood Community College. Hoyt guided Quincy to a 10-18 record in his first season and has the Hawks at 4-5 through nine games as Quincy hunts for its first winning season since 2016-17.

The Hawks have several players back from last year's squad and have benefited heavily from a big step forward from big and athletic guard Tiernan Stynes, an Australian import who leads Quincy in scoring and has been a plus rebounder so far. Fellow Aussie Ethan Bolton also has excelled as a freshman, while holdovers Camren Kincaid and Max Booher have given Quincy competent back court play.

Quincy has played two G-MAC schools to date, beating Cedarville and falling to Findlay by one point. The Hawks have one of the GLVC's top offenses, averaging 80.7 points per game to rank fourth in the league, but have struggled defensively, giving up a 75.8 points per game, 12th in the GLVC.

Tuesday will be the second-ever meeting between the Chargers and Hawks. Hillsdale won 75-64 over Quincy in 2013 on the way to the Hansen-Spear classic title in that December.

Truman: Last in the NCAA Tournament in 2022, the Bulldogs are looking to continue an upward trajectory over the last two seasons under first-year head coach Mike Worley, who came to Kirksville, Missouri after 12 seasons as an assistant at NCAA DI Troy.

It's been a slow start for Truman as the Bulldogs have lost five of their last six, but Truman is looking to build momentum in the Hansen-Spear Classic this week.

With the coaching change, the Bulldogs suffered heavy roster turnover, with four of five starters departing from the 2024-25 squad. The lone holdover is post Brennan Lovette, who now comes off the bench. Along with Lovette, Truman has had several returning players step into starting roles, including forward Drew Kingery, guard Troy Anderson, and center Emmanuel Byrd, while returner Marquis Carver-Smith also plays an important role off the bench.

Worley has reinforced the squad with impact transfers Jahki Parrinello from the JuCo ranks and Julian Brown from Samford, with both players serving as the team's leading scorers through nine games.

Truman is much like Quincy in that the Bulldogs have had no trouble scoring points, averaging 77.2 per game, but have had real problems slowing down the opposition, giving up 79.6, ranking 14th out of 15 teams in the GLVC.

Hillsdale and Truman have met only once before, also in the Hansen-Spear Classic in 2013, with Hillsdale taking a 66-49 victory on the way to the invitational title.

McKendree: After two games in Illinois, Hillsdale returns home on Sunday to play its final game before Christmas against a tough Bearcats squad that looks like a GLVC contender.

McKendree enters the week 6-2 under fifth-year coach George Suggs, who's led the Bearcats to four straight seasons of .500 or better ball and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2023.

The Bearcats take pride in the stingiest defense in the GLVC and one of the top in NCAA DII, giving up just 59.4 points per game. Guard Cha'Vez Woods has taken flight in his second season with the program, averaging 17.7 points per game, though he missed McKendree's most recent contest. Freshman guard Andrew Moore also is playing a key role, averaging 12.5 points in his first eight contests, while veterans Noah Franklin and Rini Harris also score in double figures for the Bearcats.

McKendree opened the season with wins over G-MAC squads Tiffin and Malone, both by double figures, and has an upset over then-ranked Concordia-St. Paul to its name in what has been a strong start. Sunday marks the first-ever meeting between Hillsdale and McKendree in men's basketball.

Scouting the Chargers
Hillsdale is looking to reload, not rebuild in 2025-26 after a 20-win campaign last season and heavy graduation losses that saw four starters depart.

There is upside for Hillsdale, as the Chargers rolled with a deep bench last season, meaning that despite the departures, there's still plenty of experience returning for Hillsdale to work with in 2025-26.
The Chargers' lone returning starter is point guard Ashton Janowski, a double-digit scorer in 2024-25 and a key leader and floor general at a vital position to have experience at for any young team. Along with Janowski, Hillsdale also returns junior CJ Yarian, who started 28 games at center in 2023-24 and remained an important part of the rotation in the post last year.

Hillsdale will look to a variety of veterans who came off the bench last season to play bigger roles, including 2024-25 rotation players Cole McWhinnie at guard, and Caleb Glaser and Garrett Bolte in the paint. While they got more limited minutes in 2024-25, there likely will be bigger roles for Connor Stonebraker, Jacob Meyer and Michael App as well, and a breakout season from one of those three could elevate the Chargers.

With major graduation losses, Hillsdale also brought in a huge class of new faces that could have an impact on this 2025-26 campaign. Tommy Morgan will compete to be a part of the wing rotation after redshirting last season, while guards Braylon Morris, Paxton Giertz and Israel Gentry and forwards Matt Buckman and John Morris also will get a shot at earning early playing time.

Hillsdale is hoping for the return of junior Mikey McCollum, the team's sixth man off the bench in 2024-25 who finished as the team's second-leading scorer with 12.1 points per game last year. McCollum has battled injuries and has missed the start of the 2025-26 season but if he can get healthy he would provide a major boost offensively.

Returning for his third season as head coach of Hillsdale College is Keven Bradley, who has a 38-20 record so far leading the Chargers. Bradley is joined by two new assistants, Jackson McLaughlin and Braeden Proctor, for the 2025-26 campaign.

Other Notes
  • The Chargers were picked to finish fifth in the G-MAC Preseason Poll released in late October. Defending champion Findlay was picked to repeat with eight first place votes, while Ashland and Thomas More were picked second and third, respectively, with two first place votes each. Cedarville was tabbed to place fourth. Since joining the league in 2017-18, Hillsdale has never finished lower than third in the final standings.
  • As a senior captain and Hillsdale's only returning starter from last season, Ashton Janowski is linchpin player for the Chargers. With 650 career points entering the 2025-26 season, he has a chance of becoming the 42nd player in Hillsdale College men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points with a big final campaign. He's off to an impressive start in 2025-26 so far, leading Hillsdale with 13.8 points per game and burying a game-winning shot with one second to play in a 74-72 victory over Ohio Christian on Nov. 22.
  • Freshman Braylon Morris had a huge contest for the Chargers on Saturday, Dec. 6 against Lake Erie, scoring 25 of his career-high 28 points after halftime to help the Chargers pull out a 96-86 double OT win over the Storm. Morris shot 90% from the floor and 80% from 3-point range in an impressive performance, and showed the potential to be an important offensive contributor for the team going forward if he can build off his strong game.
  • Senior Cole McWhinnie is a veteran leader for the Chargers and is playing a key role on the perimeter for Hillsdale in his first season as a starter. McWhinnie is second on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game, and leading the Chargers in 3-pointers made with 13 while also ranking first among Hillsdale players in assists (3.3 per game, ninth in the G-MAC) and steals (1.3 per game). McWhinnie's contributions have given him a sterling 1.7 assist to turnover ratio, fourth best in the G-MAC
  • Connor Stonebraker has excelled in his first significant action on the court at Hillsdale College in the 2025-26 season after two years of behind-the-scenes development. A sophomore who saw spot minutes for Hillsdale last year, Stonebraker ranks third on the Chargers in points per game (9.1) and is adding 4.5 rebounds per game at this early juncture in the season. Hillsdale will look to him to continue his significant contributions off the bench as conference play approaches.
  • Junior Caleb Glaser has proven to be an effective rebounder and shot-blocker off the bench for the Chargers this season, currently ranking 11th in the G-MAC with 5.9 boards per game, while also ranking fifth in the conference with a block per game as well. An athletic player who's not afraid to get physical in the paint, Glaser brings important energy to the Chargers as a reserve.
  • A veteran presence with many games under his belt, center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian leads Hillsdale and ranks eighth in the G-MAC with 6.4 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.4 assists per game as well. Yarian is on track to surpass 500 rebounds for his career before his time at Hillsdale is over, an impressive milestone that only a few at Hillsdale have reached.
