Shea Ruddy earns first team All-Super Region 3 honors for Chargers

2025 D2CCA All-Super Region 3 Teams

One of the country's most versatile weapons on the football field has earned more recognition for his accomplishments.

Junior Shea Ruddy, a wide receiver and Swiss Army knife for the Hillsdale College football team, was named the top return specialist in Super Region 3 on Thursday afternoon with first team All-Super Region recognition from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

The D2CCA All-Region awards are nominated and voted on by the Sports Information Directors of each Super Region, with Super Region 1 containing schools from the G-MAC, MEC, NE-10 and PSAC leagues. A total of 50 players -- 22 offensive players, 22 defensive players and six special teams players -- earn either first or second team recognition after the vote.

Ruddy was named the G-MAC Special Teams Player of the Year for the second straight season in November, after leading both the G-MAC and NCAA DII in kickoff return yards with 783. The junior also ranked seventh in NCAA DII in yards per return (32.6), the second-best return average by a player in G-MAC history behind only his own record-setting mark in 2024 (33.2). With two kickoff return touchdowns this season, Ruddy is one of just 13 players at the NCAA DII level with multiple kickoff return touchdowns, and with four now for his career has tied the Chargers career record mark set by Chad Gurica in 2005.

A 2024 honorable mention All-American and second-team Academic All-American as a return man, Ruddy has been one of the nation's best in the return game for multiple seasons now. But he's more than just a dangerous returner for the Chargers, as his speed, athleticism and intelligence make him a dangerous weapon all over the field. Ruddy was Hillsdale's leading receiver on the season, with 38 catches for 598 yards and six touchdowns, ranking in the top 10 in the G-MAC in both receiving yards and touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown and threw for a 70-yard passing touchdown this season, joining a very exclusive club in NCAA history of players who've scored touchdowns four different ways in the same season.

Ruddy will get one more game to add to his numbers for 2025 this Saturday, as he takes the field for the Chargers to battle Upper Iowa in the Albanese Candy Bowl, scheduled for 2 pm Eastern at the Brickyard Stadium in Hobart, Indiana.

In addition, Ruddy's first team award runs Hillsdale's streak of having at least one player earn D2CCA All-Region honors to seven seasons, beginning in 2018. That stretch includes seven first-team honorees.

As a first-team All-Region honoree, Ruddy now will receive consideration for D2CCA All-American honors, which will be voted on next week and announced in December. Hillsdale also awaits the announcement of American Football Coaches Association All-Region and All-American honors, which could bring additional awards for the Chargers.
