The indoor track and field season isn't even a week old and records are already falling for the Hillsdale College women's team.
The Chargers had a stunning showing at the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday night, as three Hillsdale women combined to set four program and G-MAC records, and the Chargers recorded six total provisional marks in the season opener for almost all of Hillsdale's athletes.
One of the biggest stories was a legendary debut for Hillsdale freshman sprinter
Anna Roessner, who, in her first collegiate race, broke not only the Hillsdale College record of 7.58 in the 60m dash set by past national champion Kajsa Johansson in 2021 and
Lucy Minning in spring 2025, but also the Great Midwest Athletic Conference record of 7.41 held jointly by Kya Epps of Walsh and Jordan Taylor of Findlay. Roessner's time of 7.36 in the prelims was a lightning bolt early in the day, and she eventually brought home the GVSU Holiday Open title in the event with a 7.41 in the final. Minning, still a potent force as a senior, was close behind in 7.63 in the final to place fourth.
Roessner and Minning also excelled in the 200m dash, with Roessner taking third in 24.81, the fifth-fastest time in program history, and Minning placing fourth behind her in 24.81.
Hillsdale got another record-setting performance on the track from sophomore
Allison Kuzma, fresh off her All-American finish in cross country just two weekends ago. Kuzma tore up the track in the 5,000m run to place third overall and first among collegiate runners with a time of 16:19.68, beating 2024 cross country national champion Lauren Kiley of Grand Valley State across the line by a second. Kuzma's time is the third-fastest in Hillsdale College history, just six seconds behind Hannah McIntyre's 2016 school-record effort, and also breaks McIntyre's G-MAC record of 16:23 set during the Chargers' inaugural season in the conference in 2018.
The Chargers also got a new record in the field, as sophomore
Amelia Lutz returned from a redshirt season with a stunning throw to place second in the shot put. Lutz hit a school record mark of 15.64 meters not once, but twice in the contest to break the record of 15.18 meters set by All-American thrower and teammate
Averi Parker in 2023. Lutz' season-opening effort is also tied for the fifth-best indoor shot put mark in G-MAC history.Â
It was a great day all around for Hillsdale's throws crew. Along with Lutz' record-setting mark, the Chargers set two more provisional marks in the weight throw competition. Sophomore
Olivia Newsome took third in the competition with a throw of 19.25 meters, the third best throw in program history and a provisional mark that will rank among the leaders in NCAA DII all season, while redshirt freshman
Tori Tyo also hit a provisional mark in her first collegiate meet, placing fourth with a distance of 18.24 meters that is tied for seventh in the event in Hillsdale history. Junior
Regan Wight placed ninth in the weight throw for Hillsdale and just missed a provisional mark with a throw of 17.08 meters.
The Chargers' final provisional mark came in the pole vault, where returning outdoor All-American
Tara Townsend cleared 3.72 meters to take third and put herself in contention to return to the indoor national meet in 2026 in a solid first peformance of the season.
Several other Chargers had solid performances. Sophomore
Sarah Chappelle placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a solid first meet time of 8.95, and freshman
Jessica Church had an impressive first collegiate race in the 400m dash, taking eighth in 58.88.
In the field,
Katie Kennedy took seventh in the tirple jump with a mark of 10.70 meters, just ahead of teammate
Erika Mogelvang in eighth with a distance of 10.34 meters, while
Baelyn Zitzmann took eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.63 meters.
Friday's successful performance will give Hillsdale plenty to be happy about as the team heads into the Christmas break. The Chargers will return to action on the other side of the break when the team heads to the Al Campbell Invite hosted by the University of Akron on Jan. 16.
