Scouting the Opposition

Thomas More: In just its second season in the G-MAC, Thomas More has already developed a reputation as a physical, fundamentally sound, and defensively-minded squad that's a tough out on the schedule. This season, the Saints sit in a strong position to host a quarterfinal game in the G-MAC Tournament for the second-straight season and can all but lock it up with a win on Thursday.

The Saints have done an impressive job weathering the loss of four starters from last year's team, rebuilding in-house around the lone holdover, star guard Casey George. George has developed into one of the G-MAC's most dangerous offensive players, and he's flanked by two impressive redshirt freshmen who've exploded onto the scene this season in Kai Simpson and Jack McCune, both double-digit scorers.

Big men Mitchell Rylee and Carson Browne man the post for Thomas More, who have a deep bench led by guards Wyatt Vieth, Zion Crowe and Ryan Paris that allow the Saints to shift size and playing style to fit the situation.

The Saints are a dangerous team with the tournament on the horizon, and very capable of pulling upsets and making a run at the G-MAC Tourney crown.

Malone: Although the 2024-25 season hasn't played out as hoped, the Pioneers still enter the final week in good shape to make the G-MAC Tournament after missing out last season.

The Pioneers have relied on a top-heavy lineup with a strong starting five, headlined by impact transfer Ryan Bartley from Mount Mercy University and veteran guard Simon Blair, a returning All-G-MAC honoree. Tre Baumgardner III, a former Ashland and Shawnee State player who missed most of last season with an injury, has also been a huge impact player for Malone this season, as has veteran post presence Caleb Conard.

Despite four strong starters, Malone hasn't been able to stay in the G-MAC title race because of a lack of production behind its core players. Tahleik Walker, Frasier LaRocque and Jake Bruns are all players who get consistent minutes for the Pioneers who Malone will be looking for more from offensively as it tries to surprise teams and make a run in the G-MAC Tourney.

With eight players listed as seniors on the roster who may be playing their final home game of their careers this Saturday, Malone will be motivated to get one more win at Osborne Hall for its graduating players and build momentum heading into the G-MAC Tourney.

Scouting the Chargers
Hillsdale has had a rough month of February but, at 17-9 overall, still have a shot at a top four finish in the G-MAC and host rights for a G-MAC Tournament Quarterfinal. Two wins this week to finish off the season would give them a shot at one more home game if a couple of other results break the Chargers' way on Saturday.

Entering this winter, the Chargers went from returning only one starter last year to returning four of five starters this season, and 11 of 13 players that appeared in at least one game in the 2023-24 season. Leading the way is senior forward Joe Reuter, a two-time All-G-MAC selection who's entering his third year as a starter and one of just three first-team All-G-MAC players from a year ago who are back for the 2024-25 season.

Reuter led Hillsdale in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks last season and should be one of the top players in the conference. He'll be flanked by two more returning double-digit scorers in guards Charles Woodhams, a fifth-year senior, and Ashton Janowski, a junior. Both players came into their own last season as starters and scoring threats and give Hillsdale great toughness and continuity up front.

An area where the Chargers are hoping for major improvement is in the paint. Starting center CJ Yarian returns after a solid first season on the court for Hillsdale, while fellow sophomores Caleb Glaser and Garrett Bolte gained great experience off the bench and will look to continue growing as sophomores. The unit will get a big boost from a healthy Eric Radisevic, who contributed last year but was limited for much of the season by injuries. Now entering 2024-25 fully recovered, Radisevic could make a big impact for the Chargers, who lacked offensive punch from the center position at points in 2023-24 and could jump to another level as a team with better production down low.

Two players who could see their role grow as Hillsdale looks to replace the graduated Samuel Vasiu are sharpshooting sophomore Mikey McCollum and junior point guard Cole McWhinnie, both of whom excelled in substitute roles in 2023-24 and who will compete for more minutes this season.

Additionally, don't count out two players coming off their redshirt years this season. Guard Logan Beaston and post Connor Stonebraker are both skilled offensive players and have the talent to carve out roles of their own on an experienced squad, while further bolstering the Chargers' depth.

Head coach Keven Bradley returns for his second season at the helm after a solid first season, and brings back Evan Morrissey as his assistant for a second year.

Matchup History
  • Hillsdale went 1-2 last season in three meetings with Thomas More during the Saints' first season as a transitioning NCAA DII team and a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and lost its only meeting with the Saints in 2024-25 so far, falling 73-63 on the road. The two teams met in the G-MAC Tournament last season and could be on a collision course for a third meeting again as they currently sit fourth and fifth in the Points Rating System that determines the G-MAC Tournament seeding.
  • The Chargers are 14-7 all-time against Malone in what has been a relatively competitive series in recent years. Hilldale won a 71-59 game at home on Dec. 7, 2024 earlier this season in the most recent meeting between the two programs, while Malone took the two teams' most recent meeting in Canton, 61-55, on Dec. 16, 2023.

Other Notes
  • The seedings for the 2025 G-MAC Tournament will be determined by the Points Rating System. Currently Hillsdale is fifth in the PRS and would travel to Thomas More for the quarterfinal round if the season ended today. With a game against Thomas More remaining, Hillsdale has a chance to overtake the Saints and host a G-MAC Quarterfinal if it can win out and get some help in other contests on Saturday.
  • Senior forward Joe Reuter delivered one of the defining moments of an impressive four-year career at Hillsdale with seven points in overtime to lead the Chargers past Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 1. The 2021-22 G-MAC Freshman of the Year and a two-time All-G-MAC player, Reuter has been crucial for the Chargers this season, averaging 11.5 points per game while ranking sixth in the G-MAC in rebounds per game (7), 10th in assists per game (2.9), sixth in blocked shots per game (0.8), first in steals per game (1.8) and ninth in free throw percentage (.714). Reuter also is working his way up the all-time lists statistically at Hillsdale, as his 1,326 career points rank 22nd all time, and he surpassed the 600-rebound mark earlier this season.
  • Reuter has also become one of the league's top players in forcing turnovers, leading the G-MAC in both steals and steals per game. The senior has two five-steal contests this season, and with 48 steals in 2024-25 and 133 for his career, he's close to cracking the top 10 at Hillsdale for both single season and career steals.
  • Sophomore Mikey McCollum has been a huge asset for the Chargers off the bench, keeping Hillsdale's second unit humming at a high level offensively even without the starters on the floor. McCollum is averaging 11.9 points per game, second most on the team, thanks to 47 made 3-pointers and a strong performance at the foul line.  Freshman Logan Beaston has been prolific from deep as well, with 50 made 3-pointers in his first collegiate campaign, and the team's leading scorer, senior Charles Woodhams, also has 44 made 3-pointers as outside shooting has been a big asset for Hillsdale on the season.
  • Thursday will be a battle of the G-MAC's two best defensive teams, as Hillsdale and Thomas More are tied at the top of the conference in points conceded per game with 66.6, tied for 22nd best in all of NCAA DII. Both teams also do a great job of controlling the glass, as Hillsdale's 30.6 rebounds conceded ranks 11th in NCAA DII and is second in the G-MAC only to Thomas More, who gives up 28.6 rebounds per game, the fourth-best mark in the country.
  • Hillsdale is known for its excellent 3-point defense, and last year's team was the best the Chargers have had at it since the 3-point line was introduced. Teams shot just 29.3% from deep on Hillsdale last season, the lowest among G-MAC squads and in the top 10 nationally. So far, through 26 games, Hillsdale has continued to excel on that front, conceding just 32.9% from beyond the arc, which ranks in the top three in the G-MAC.
  • Hillsdale prioritizes taking care of the basketball and passing to set up quality shots, and that's reflected in the team's strong assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.52, the 13th best mark nationally. That emphasis has helped the Chargers become one of the more efficient offensive teams in conference play, ranking fifth in the G-MAC in field goal percentage (47.1%), third in 3-point percentage (36.1%), and fifth in free throw percentage (72.7%).
