The Hillsdale College men's golf team's top goal entering the 2024-25 campaign was to end a three-year stretch of missing the NCAA DII Tournament.
Mission accomplished.
The Chargers were one of 10 Midwest Region teams that earned a spot in the NCAA DII Central/Midwest Regional, the NCAA announced on Friday afternoon. Hillsdale will travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to compete in the three-day event at St. Joseph Country Club on May 8-10, and battle for a chance to advance to the program's first-ever NCAA DII Championship, scheduled to take place on May 19-23 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The top four finishing teams in the Midwest/Central regional, along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team, will earn a berth to the national championship in Florida.
Hillsdale overcame injuries and other setbacks to finish 10th in the final regional poll at the conclusion of the regular season and earn one of the 10 qualifying spots. The Chargers locked up their bid with a fourth-place finish in the G-MAC Championship earlier this week, beating out another NCAA Regional qualifier, Ashland, in the process. Sophomores
Robert Thompson and
Ryan O'Rourke posted top 10 finishes in the G-MAC Championship to lead the Chargers to the finish.
This is Hillsdale's third appearance in the NCAA DII Regional round as a team, having finished tied for 11
th in 2021 and tied for 13
th in 2019 in their two previous qualifications. The best individual performance by a Chargers golfer in the NCAA Regional remains Joel Pietila's tie for ninth place playing as an individual in the 2017 Regional, followed closely by Ryan Zetwick's tie for 10
th place in 2021.
More information, including a live stats link for the regional, will be posted later on
