Sophomore
Amelia Lutz made an impressive bit of history with a stellar performance for the Hillsdale College women's track and field team at the Al Campbell Invite in Akron on Friday.
Having already broken the school record in the shot put at the GVSU Holiday Open in December, Lutz returned from Christmas break and obliterated her own mark by nearly a meter with a winning throw of 16.42 meters. That mark also easily surpassed the Great Midwest Athletic Conference record of 16.08 meters set by past Findlay national champion Trista Fintel, and ranks second in the nation currently, behind only past outdoor national champion Erika Beistle of Grand Valley State.
With the throw, Lutz has firmly inserted herself into the national championship conversation in March for the event, but her stellar performance wasn't the only noteworthy showing for the Chargers on Friday.
Anna Roessner continued an impressive freshman campaign as well for Hillsdale, winning the 200m dash in a new personal best time of 24.62 that ranks 15th in the nation at the NCAA DII level in the event and is the fourth-fastest time indoors in the 200 in Hillsdale College history. Roessner also took second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.50, less than two-tenths of a second off her personal best of 7.36 that currently leads all of NCAA DII in the event. Senior teammate
Lucy Minning ran a solid third in the 200m dash as well for the Chargers, in 24.95, and took 12th in the 60m dash in 7.82.
Hillsdale put two in the top three finishers in the high jump, with sophomore
Baelyn Zitzmann earning runner-up honors on a clearance of 1.65 meters and senior
Erika Mogelvang tying for third with a new personal best clearance of 1.60 meters. The Chargers also did well in the weight throw, with
Olivia Newsome placing fourth with a throw of 18.46 meters,
Tori Tyo taking seventh with a mark of 17.78 meters, and
Averi Parker placing ninth in the invite bracket with a mark of 16.92 meters. Parker also took seventh behind Lutz in the shot put with a throw of 13.32 meters.
On the track,
Sarah Chappelle placed sixth in the 60m hurdles with a solid time of 8.89, and Hillsdale had three solid finishes in quick succession in the 400m dash, with
Jessica Church placing ninth (59.13),
Francesca Federici finishing 10th (59.15) and
Evelyn Overlease taking 11th (59.52).
Katie Kennedy also placed 12th in the long jump (5.14 meters) for the Chargers.
Hillsdale next competes at home on Jan. 23, as the Chargers host the annual Wide Track Classic at the Biermann Athletic Center, beginning at 10 a.m.
