Scouting the Opposition
Findlay: A 24-win team last season returning four players with starting experience, expectations were sky-high for the Oilers entering this season. A frustrating start has seen Findlay struggle to live up to those expectations, but wins in three of the last four games and a chaotic G-MAC race mean the Oilers still have a shot to pull things together and reach the promised land.
Â
A high-octane team that presses in the full court from start to finish and looks to score quickly, Findlay has leaned on a guard-heavy lineup led by three double-digit scorers – returning starters Anthony Johnson and Mekhi Elmore along with steady veteran presence Mason Brandt.
Â
The Oilers go deep, with 12 players who get nine or more minutes a game, including emerging sophomore Alex Kendall and posts Jagger Landers, Ian Ioppolo and Steele Meister in the paint, and guards Javonte Hill, Jake Bishop, Max Roth and Josh Thorbahn on the perimeter.
Â
Findlay is as good or better offensively than last season with a G-MAC leading 91.4 points per game, but have fallen off defensively, giving up nearly nine more points per contest. Tightening up the defensive end is key for a stretch run at the G-MAC title.
Â
The Oilers have dominated the all-time series with Hillsdale, with a 61-14 mark, but seven of Hillsdale's 14 wins have come in the last decade, and Findlay has just an 8-6 edge in the last 14 meetings. Findlay swept both contests last year on the way to the G-MAC regular season title.
Â
Ashland: Ashland has gone through ups and downs this season with a young squad, but the Eagles remain near the top of a crowded G-MAC title race as we approach the midpoint of the season.
Â
The Eagles entered 2025-26 with optimism as the team returned defending G-MAC Player of the Year Maceo Williams in the paint, as well as gifted Toledo transfer Cooper Davis on the wing. Those building blocks have served Ashland well so far, while redshirt freshman Jordan Edwards has emerged as one of the G-MAC's top point guards in his first full season of action, leading the G-MAC in assists per game.
Â
Ashland is looking for more consistency from the rest of its lineup. Jason Moore has given the Eagles a boost since moving into the starting lineup, while youngsters Max Dawson and Jason Henlon and Lewis transfer Destin Logan also play significant minutes. The Eagles have been solid offensively, averaging 81.1 points per game, but rank just ninth in the G-MAC in scoring defense so far.
Â
The Eagles hold a narrow 32-30 lead in the all-time series with Hillsdale, but the Chargers have won three straight, including both meetings in 2024-25.

Scouting the Chargers
Hillsdale is looking to reload, not rebuild in 2025-26 after a 20-win campaign last season and heavy graduation losses that saw four starters depart.
There is upside for Hillsdale, as the Chargers rolled with a deep bench last season, meaning that despite the departures, there's still plenty of experience returning for Hillsdale to work with in 2025-26.
The Chargers' lone returning starter is point guard
Ashton Janowski, a double-digit scorer in 2024-25 and a key leader and floor general at a vital position to have experience at for any young team. Along with Janowski, Hillsdale also returns junior
CJ Yarian, who started 28 games at center in 2023-24 and remained an important part of the rotation in the post last year.
So far this season, Hillsdale has gotten solid returns from a post rotation that includes Yarian as well as stretch four
Garrett Bolte, dynamic center
Caleb Glaser and skilled forward
Connor Stonebraker, who play a significant chunk of minutes off the bench. Bolte, Glaser and Stonebraker are all on track to post career highs in nearly every stat this season.
On the perimeter, guard
Cole McWhinnie has moved into the starting lineup alongside Janowski, who continues to be a leader for the Chargers. McWhinnie also is posting career highs. Freshmen, both redshirt and true, are making a significant impact for Hillsdale, with
Tommy Morgan starting on the wing and guards
Braylon Morris and
Paxton Giertz also getting big minutes off the bench. A third true freshman,
Matt Buckman, made his season debut before Christmas break after missing much of November and December with an injury, and could add even more quality depth.
Hillsdale is hoping for the return of junior
Mikey McCollum, the team's sixth man off the bench in 2024-25 who finished as the team's second-leading scorer with 12.1 points per game last year. McCollum has battled injuries and has missed the start of the 2025-26 season but if he can get healthy he would provide a major boost offensively.
Returning for his third season as head coach of Hillsdale College is
Keven Bradley, who has a 38-20 record so far leading the Chargers. Bradley is joined by two new assistants,
Jackson McLaughlin and
Braeden Proctor, for the 2025-26 campaign.

Other Notes
- The Chargers were picked to finish fifth in the G-MAC Preseason Poll released in late October. Defending champion Findlay was picked to repeat with eight first place votes, while Ashland and Thomas More were picked second and third, respectively, with two first place votes each. Cedarville was tabbed to place fourth. Since joining the league in 2017-18, Hillsdale has never finished lower than third in the final standings.
- As a senior captain and Hillsdale's only returning starter from last season, Ashton Janowski is linchpin player for the Chargers. With 650 career points entering the 2025-26 season, he has a chance of becoming the 42nd player in Hillsdale College men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points with a big final campaign. He's off to an impressive start in 2025-26 so far, leading Hillsdale with 11.9 points per game and burying a game-winning shot with one second to play in a 74-72 victory over Ohio Christian on Nov. 22.
- Junior Caleb Glaser was inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 3 against Malone and has proven that was a wise decision with a string of impressive performances, including a 19 point, nine rebound effort against Walsh on Jan. 5 and a career best 21-point, eight rebound performance at Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 8. Always a high-energy player throughout his career, Glaser currently ranks second on the team in scoring (10.9 points per game) and first in rebounding (6.1 per game).
- Freshman Braylon Morris has flashed serious potential off the bench for the Chargers to start his career at Hillsdale, with a pair of 20-plus point games in victories for the Chargers so far. Morris poured in 28 points in a double-OT win over Lake Erie on Dec. 6, and led Hillsdale with 22 points in a win over Truman State on Dec. 17. In both victories he shot over 70% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range. As Morris continues to adapt to the college level and grow more comfortable, his stock should continue to rise.
- Senior Cole McWhinnie is a veteran leader for the Chargers and is playing a key role on the perimeter for Hillsdale in his first season as a starter. McWhinnie is averaging a career high in points while also ranking first among Hillsdale players in assists (3.2 per game, eighth in the G-MAC) and steals (0.8 per game). He also ranks second in the G-MAC among all players in assist to turnover ratio (2.6)
- Redshirt sophomore Connor Stonebraker had a big week off the bench for the Chargers, scoring 23 points in a Thursday win over Cedarville and adding 14 more in Saturday's contest at Tiffin. A third year player who's seeing consistent action for the Chargers for the first time, Stonebraker is flashing his versatile skill set and scoring ability, currently ranking third for the Chargers with 9.4 points per game on the season.
- A veteran presence with many games under his belt, center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian ranks second for Hillsdale with 5.3 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.3 assists per game as well. Yarian also ranks fifth in the G-MAC averaging a block per game and is on track to surpass 500 rebounds for his career before his time at Hillsdale is over, an impressive milestone that only a few Chargers have reached.
