Scouting the Opposition
KWC: The Panthers are undergoing a near-complete rebuild after winning 22 games last season, as four players and just one starter return in 2025-26 from last year's squad. It's been a slow start for KWC, who sit at just 2-4 in G-MAC play, but wins over Ashland and Illinois-Springfield show that KWC is still a tough out, especially at home.
Â
The lone vet in the lineup is senior Fatih Huyuk, a key piece to last year's squad who averages 13 points and seven rebounds per game as one of KWC's top threats on the floor.
Â
To supplement Huyuk, head coach Drew Cooper hit the transfer portal hard, bringing in forward LaVonte Harris from UIndy and three Division I transfers, Jorge Sanchez-Ramos from LaSalle, Ke'Andre Jones from Lamar St. and Armandas Plintauskas from Merrimack, all of whom start and play major minutes for the Panthers.
Â
Marist transfer Caleb Mackrey leads the bench unit along with four JuCo additions – JJ Faulkner, Chinedu Nwankwo, Jordan Brown and Anthony Davis, Jr. The Panthers have a decent defense but are struggling for consistency offensively, ranking 11
th out of 12 G-MAC squads in points per game.
Â
The all-time series between KWC and Hillsdale is tight, with the Panthers holding a 10-9 edge. The two teams split a pair of meetings last year, with each team winning on their home court.
Â
Thomas More: A newcomer to the G-MAC, the Saints have impressed so far, making the G-MAC tourney title game in each of their first two seasons. To repeat that feat, the Saints will have to dig their way out of an early hole after starting 1-4 in league play so far.
Â
Thomas More is led by one of the most dynamic players in the G-MAC, guard Kai Simpson, who's followed up a G-MAC Freshman of the Year honor by ranking second in the G-MAC in points (18.3) and assists (4.8) per game so far. The Saints back Simpson up with an imposing front line led by returning starters Mitchell Rylee and Carson Browne.
Â
On the wings, Simpson is flanked by two veterans in senior sharpshooter Ryan Paris and athletic Walsh transfer Colin McHale, who's performed well since entering the lineup in December. Freshman Daniel Allen has come off the bench the last two games and also is a dangerous shooter, hitting 34 3-pointers at a 48.6% rate so far. Colin McClure and Jashaun Pouncy are two more strong contributors off a deep bench for Thomas More.
Â
The Saints are a strong offensive team, averaging 81.9 points per game, but have slipped defensively from the past two years, conceding 71.9 points per game after holding teams well under 70 in both 2023-24 and 2024-25. Getting back on track at that end of the floor will be important in January and February.
Â
Hillsdale is 2-3 all time in a tight series against Thomas More, with all five contests decided by 10 or less points. The Chargers won the most recent meeting on Feb. 27 last season at home, 70-65.
Â
Scouting the Chargers:
Hillsdale is looking to reload, not rebuild in 2025-26 after a 20-win campaign last season and heavy graduation losses that saw four starters depart.
There is upside for Hillsdale, as the Chargers rolled with a deep bench last season, meaning that despite the departures, there's still plenty of experience returning for Hillsdale to work with in 2025-26.
The Chargers' lone returning starter is point guard
Ashton Janowski, a double-digit scorer in 2024-25 and a key leader and floor general at a vital position to have experience at for any young team. Along with Janowski, Hillsdale also returns junior
CJ Yarian, who started 28 games at center in 2023-24 and remained an important part of the rotation in the post last year.
So far this season, Hillsdale has gotten solid returns from a post rotation that includes Yarian as well as stretch four
Garrett Bolte and reserves
Caleb Glaser and
Connor Stonebraker, who play a significant chunk of minutes off the bench. Bolte, Glaser and Stonebraker are all on track to post career highs in nearly every stat this season.
On the perimeter, guard
Cole McWhinnie has moved into the starting lineup alongside Janowski, who continues to be a leader for the Chargers. McWhinnie also is posting career highs. Freshmen, both redshirt and true, are making a significant impact for Hillsdale, with
Tommy Morgan starting on the wing and guards
Braylon Morris and
Paxton Giertz also getting big minutes off the bench. A third true freshman,
Matt Buckman, made his season debut before Christmas break after missing much of November and December with an injury, and could add even more quality depth.
Hillsdale is hoping for the return of junior
Mikey McCollum, the team's sixth man off the bench in 2024-25 who finished as the team's second-leading scorer with 12.1 points per game last year. McCollum has battled injuries and has missed the start of the 2025-26 season but if he can get healthy he would provide a major boost offensively.
Returning for his third season as head coach of Hillsdale College is
Keven Bradley, who has a 38-20 record so far leading the Chargers. Bradley is joined by two new assistants,
Jackson McLaughlin and
Braeden Proctor, for the 2025-26 campaign.

Other Notes
- The Chargers were picked to finish fifth in the G-MAC Preseason Poll released in late October. Defending champion Findlay was picked to repeat with eight first place votes, while Ashland and Thomas More were picked second and third, respectively, with two first place votes each. Cedarville was tabbed to place fourth. Since joining the league in 2017-18, Hillsdale has never finished lower than third in the final standings.
- As a senior captain and Hillsdale's only returning starter from last season, Ashton Janowski is linchpin player for the Chargers. With 650 career points entering the 2025-26 season, he has a chance of becoming the 42nd player in Hillsdale College men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points with a big final campaign. He's off to an impressive start in 2025-26 so far, leading Hillsdale with 12.8 points per game and burying a game-winning shot with one second to play in a 74-72 victory over Ohio Christian on Nov. 22.
- Freshman Braylon Morris has flashed serious potential off the bench for the Chargers to start his career at Hillsdale, with a pair of 20-plus point games in victories for the Chargers so far. Morris poured in 28 points in a double-OT win over Lake Erie on Dec. 6, and led Hillsdale with 22 points in a win over Truman State on Dec. 17. In both victories he shot over 70% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range. As Morris continues to adapt to the college level and grow more comfortable, his stock should continue to rise.
- Senior Cole McWhinnie is a veteran leader for the Chargers and is playing a key role on the perimeter for Hillsdale in his first season as a starter. McWhinnie is averaging a career high in points while also ranking first among Hillsdale players in assists (2.8 per game, 10th in the G-MAC) and steals (0.8 per game).
- Junior Garrett Bolte is coming on strong for the Chargers, with four double-figure scoring contests in a five game stretch in December to rise up Hillsdale's scoring list this season. A solid rebounder and tenacious defender, Bolte has proven himself to be a valuable addition to the Chargers' starting lineup and will look to remain hot offensively in 2026.
- Junior Caleb Glaser was inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 3 against Malone and has proven that was a wise decision with back-to-back impressive performances, finishing with eight points and 12 rebounds in a win over the Pioneers and adding a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Walsh two nights later. Always a high-energy player throughout his career, Glaser currently ranks second on the team in scoring (10.2 points per game) and first in rebounding (6.3 per game).
- A veteran presence with many games under his belt, center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian ranks second for Hillsdale with 5.6 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.2 assists per game as well. Yarian is on track to surpass 500 rebounds for his career before his time at Hillsdale is over, an impressive milestone that only a few at Hillsdale have reached.
