Scouting the Opposition
Lake Erie: The Storm are on track for the best season in program history at the NCAA DII level and very much in the hunt for the G-MAC Championship with three weeks left in the regular season. It's now been an impressive two-year run for Lake Erie since switching to an up-tempo, pressing style of play, with back-to-back winning campaigns.

Lake Erie graduated their two leading scorers off of last year's 19-10 squad but have replaced them in the transfer portal with impressive wing Gavin Welch, a Barry transfer, and guard Amari Williams, a talented JuCo product.

Those two scoring leaders are joined by several returners proficient in Lake Erie's system, including former Notre Dame College players Kai Bloom and Gio Moore, post Ronnie Leonard and stalwart seniors Jake Leibacher and Trace Bishko. Two more transfers, Caelum Ethridge and Rokas Castillo, play major roles for a Lake Erie squad that goes at least 12 deep most nights.

Lake Erie has never made an NCAA DII tournament, but should be in the mix when the first regional rankings are released after an upset win on the road over nationally ranked Walsh last week.

Hillsdale has won 26 of 30 meetings with the Storm since their first meeting in 2010, including a 96-86 victory by the Chargers in overtime at home on Dec. 6 earlier this season. All four of Lake Erie's victories in the series, however, have come in Painesville, including a 69-67 win in 2024-25.

Ashland: The Eagles are in great position to contend for the G-MAC crown with three weeks to go, a game back of conference leader Walsh in the standings and a showdown with the Cavaliers at home on Feb. 26 that could decide the race. Ashland, however, has to keep winning until then to stay in position to turn that game into a decider.

The Eagles entered 2025-26 with optimism as the team returned defending G-MAC Player of the Year Maceo Williams in the paint, as well as gifted Toledo transfer Cooper Davis on the wing. Those building blocks have served Ashland well so far, while redshirt freshman Jordan Edwards has emerged as one of the G-MAC's top point guards in his first full season of action, leading the G-MAC in assists per game.

Ashland has been looking for more consistency from the rest of its lineup, and has started to get it over a recent five-game winning streak. Post Jason Moore has given the Eagles a boost since moving into the starting lineup, while youngsters Max Dawson and Jason Henlon and Lewis transfer Destin Logan also play significant minutes.  Ashland has taken a big step forward defensively during that 5-0 stretch, holding its last four opponents under 70 points.

The Eagles hold a narrow 33-30 lead in the all-time series with Hillsdale, and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Chargers on Jan. 24 with an 82-72 victory in Hillsdale.

Scouting the Chargers
After battling through the first three months of the season, Hillsdale hits February with plenty to play for and big games ahead as the Chargers look to lock up a G-MAC Tournament bid.

Hillsdale is a balanced and deep team offensively, led by senior point guard Ashton Janowski. The team's leading scorer, Janowski is approaching 1,000 points for his career and shooting more efficiently from the floor than ever, with a career-high 35% shooting percentage from 3-point range.

Along with Janowski, the Chargers are also leaning heavily on a solid four-man rotation in the post. Junior Caleb Glaser and sophomore Connor Stonebraker had great months in January and both moved into the starting lineup, with Glaser leading the team in rebounding and ranking second in scoring and Stonebraker ranking third in points per game. Hillsdale also has gotten major contributions in the paint from Garrett Bolte and CJ Yarian, who bring different skillsets to the table that allow the Chargers to mix and match for the situation.

On the wing, freshman Braylon Morris has become a key offensive threat, and moved into the starting lineup last week, averaging 8.8 points and shooting 41.8% from deep, while redshirt freshman Tommy Morgan continues to make significant contributions at both ends of the floor in his first season of action as well.

Guard Cole McWhinnie is posting career highs for the Chargers as well and is an important connector in the starting lineup for Hillsdale, while freshman Paxton Giertz also has carved out a role off the bench on the perimeter.

Returning for his third season as head coach of Hillsdale College is Keven Bradley, who has a 38-20 record so far leading the Chargers. Bradley is joined by two new assistants, Jackson McLaughlin and Braeden Proctor, for the 2025-26 campaign.

Other Notes
  • Hillsdale ranked eighth in the most recent Great Midwest Point Rating System release on Feb. 8. The Point Rating System will be used to determine the eight teams that make the G-MAC Tourney in March, and to seed the field. The Chargers are in a tight race with Malone for the eighth and final spot, but have a slight lead in the standings and more opportunities to add points down the stretch with a tougher schedule.
  • As a senior captain and Hillsdale's only returning starter from last season, Ashton Janowski is linchpin player for the Chargers. With 650 career points entering the 2025-26 season, he has a chance of becoming the 42nd player in Hillsdale College men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points with a big final campaign. He's off to an impressive start in 2025-26 so far, leading Hillsdale with 11.8 points per game and burying a game-winning shot with one second to play in a 74-72 victory over Ohio Christian on Nov. 22.
  • Junior Caleb Glaser was inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 3 against Malone and has proven that was a wise decision with a string of impressive performances, including a 19 point, nine rebound effort against Walsh on Jan. 5 and a career best 21-point, eight rebound performance at Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 8. Always a high-energy player throughout his career, Glaser currently ranks second on the team in scoring (11.3 points per game) and first in rebounding (6.2 per game) and has seven double-figure scoring games in his last eight.
  • Freshman Braylon Morris has flashed serious potential off the bench for the Chargers to start his career at Hillsdale, with a pair of 20-plus point games in victories for the Chargers so far. Morris poured in 28 points in a double-OT win over Lake Erie on Dec. 6, and led Hillsdale with 22 points in a win over Truman State on Dec. 17. In both victories he shot over 70% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range. He's been hot recently, with four double-figure scoring contests in his last seven games.
  • Senior Cole McWhinnie is a veteran leader for the Chargers and is playing a key role on the perimeter for Hillsdale in his first season as a starter. McWhinnie is averaging a career high in points while also ranking first among Hillsdale players in assists (3.4 per game, eighth in the G-MAC) and steals (0.8 per game). He also ranks third in the G-MAC among all players in assist to turnover ratio (2.7). McWhinnie had a great game against Ohio Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 7, with a career high 17 points and four made 3-pointers.
  • Redshirt sophomore Connor Stonebraker has had big games off the bench recently for the Chargers, scoring 23 points in a Jan. 15 win over Cedarville and adding 14 more in a Jan. 17 contest at Tiffin. A third year player who's seeing consistent action for the Chargers for the first time, Stonebraker is flashing his versatile skill set and scoring ability, currently ranking third for the Chargers with 9.4 points per game on the season. He moved into the starting lineup for the first time this past week, and did well in a win over Tiffin with 14 points on Feb. 5.
  • A veteran presence with many games under his belt, center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian ranks second for Hillsdale with 5.8 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.1 assists per game as well. Yarian also ranks third in the G-MAC averaging a block per game and is on track to surpass 500 rebounds for his career before his time at Hillsdale is over, an impressive milestone that only a few Chargers have reached.
