Scouting the Opposition
Tiffin: Tiffin enters February still in play for a potential G-MAC Tourney berth but needing a strong showing this week to make up ground in the standings.
Two players who showed real promise for Tiffin as freshmen in 2024-25 have taken a big step forward this season. Guard Megan Campbell has become one of the conference's top players, while fellow sophomore Isabelle Niederst has nearly doubled her points per game average and proven to be a dependable partner for Campbell.
Head coach Josh Mason also has done strong work in the transfer portal, adding a high-scoring impact guard from Division I in Robert Morris transfer Hailey Unger. Serenitee Johnson is another key backcourt addition from Mount Vernon Nazarene, and JuCo transfer Garyana Overton has teamed with holdover Myka Richardson to give the Dragons a solid presence in the post. Peyton Magee, Tomi Hinkle and Taylor Kelley round out the rotation for Tiffin.
The Dragons' rise is thanks to a massive improvement offensively, as Tiffin is averaging 10 points more per game than last season.
Hillsdale's women have had a history of success against Tiffin, with a 26-13 record all-time in a series dating back to 1993. The Dragons, however, snapped a three game Charger winning streak with an 80-52 win at home on Jan. 17.
ODU: Ohio Dominican is still alive for a potential G-MAC tourney berth, but, at 3-9, need to take advantage of this week's matchups to make up ground in the standings.
ODU leans heavily on a solid defense that's among the G-MAC's best at slowing down teams that rely on 3-pointers for offense. Senior guard Sarah Ochs is in her second season as a starter and is a key offensive weapon for the Panthers, while forward Jenna Shackleford has taken a big step forward offensively as well.
Veteran Macy Chapman helps run the offense along with Ochs, while Youngstown State transfer Mackenzie Hurd also has made a key impact for ODU as a newcomer to the team. The biggest outside threat is freshman Gracie Cosgrove, who's knocked down 30 triples on .353 shooting.
Jazmyn Wheeler is the top substitute in the post, and freshman Eve Schwemley also brings shooting touch off the bench for the Panthers. Madelyn Fearon and Halle Warner round out the rotation for ODU.
Hillsdale leads the all-time series with ODU 16-11 since the two teams' first meeting in 2011, and the Chargers have won five straight and seven of their last eight over the Panthers. ODU's most recent win in the series was a Dec. 10, 2022 game in Columbus, while its most recent win in Hillsdale was on Jan. 30, 2021.
Scouting Hillsdale
Â
As Hillsdale enters the final month of the 2025-26 regular season, the Chargers are in position to make the G-MAC Tournament, but will need a strong finish to secure their spot and improve their seed. The upcoming home weekend is crucial as the Chargers face two teams that are trying to make up ground and overtake them in the standings. Victories would put Hillsdale in a strong position moving forward.
The Chargers are buoyed heavily offensively by a breakout campaign from junior guard
Annalise Pietrzyk, who's nearly doubled her scoring output from last season and is among the G-MAC leaders at 15.1 points per game, with three contests with 25 or more. Also playing a big role for Hillsdale offensively is the center rotation of
Savannah Smith and
Ellie Bruce, who each play roughly half the game and combine to average another 20 points between them. Smith, the leading returning scorer from the 2024-25 squad, has been an impact player in the post and ramped up her contributions in the month of January, while the 6-foot-2 Bruce is among the G-MAC leaders in blocked shots and an imposing two-way force.
Â
Senior
Emma Ruhlman is an excellent rebounder from the wing, a strong shooter and a critical leader as well for the Chargers, while sophomore
Magdalena Sularski and freshman
Maddie Smith share point guard duties for Hillsdale and are growing into the role.
Emilia Sularski and
Sydney Pnacek are both key bench players for the Chargers, while Hillsdale is hoping for a strong month of February from
Sarah Aleknavicius, who was among the team's leading scorers before an injury knocked her out for much of January.
Â
Hillsdale is coached by
Brianna Brennan, who is in her third year at the helm and was named the BCAM College Coach of the Year for the state of Michigan after guiding the Chargers to the NCAA Tournament in the 2024-25 season.
Abbey McNeil returns for her third season as associate head coach, and alumnus
Sophia Pierce is back in Hillsdale for her first season as an assistant coach to round out the staff.

Other Notes
- Junior Savannah Smith had an incredible game on Jan. 24 to help Hillsdale snap a 14-game losing streak against Ashland, pouring in a career high 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Chargers took down the Eagles in a 53-52 thriller. Smith has been one of Hillsdale's most consistent offensive weapons off the bench, ranking second on the team with 11.6 points per game in just 19 minutes a contest. She makes a strong post tandem with starter Ellie Bruce, who's averaging nine points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game in the minutes when Smith isn't on the floor.
- Senior captain Emma Ruhlman earned G-MAC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 5 after posting a 16-point, 14 rebound double-double to lead the Chargers to an upset victory over then 19th-ranked Malone on Jan. 3. A three-year contributor and two-year starter for Hillsdale, Ruhlman has provided invaluable leadership and great 3-point shooting. As a senior, she's also become one of the top rebounders in the G-MAC, leading Hillsdale and ranking 13th in the conference with 6.3 per game.
- Annalise Pietrzyk set a new career high for the Chargers with 30 points in a big win over conference title contender Walsh on Jan. 5. She's having a phenomenal season for the Chargers, already earning one G-MAC Player of the Week honor early in the campaign. Always a sharpshooter for Hillsdale, the junior has stayed hot from deep, ranking second in the G-MAC and 25th in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (38.9%), but she's now showing the all-around development of her game, ranking eighth in the G-MAC in scoring (15.1) and assists (3), and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1) as a leader and tone-setter for the Chargers.
- Hillsdale sophomore Sarah Aleknavicius played for the first time in nearly a month against Walsh on Jan. 31, making her return from an injury. It's a huge return for the Chargers, as before getting hurt, Aleknavicius was averaging 7.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, major improvements on her freshman numbers. Getting Aleknavicius back could be a game-changer for a Chargers offense that hasn't scored more than 70 in a game since she went down with her injury on Jan. 3.
- Hillsdale has been a prolific 3-point team in 2025-26, shooting 34.4% from 3-point range as a team to lead the G-MAC and rank in the top 25 nationally. Five Chargers players are shooting 37.5% or better from 3-point range with at least 10 makes – Pietrzyk, Ruhlman, Aleknavicius, and twins Emilia and Magdalena Sularski.
- Part of the reason the Chargers are shooting so well is they're doing a great job of sharing the basketball, leading the G-MAC with 14.7 assists per game. The Chargers are also second in the G-MAC and rank 29th in the nation with 4.11 blocks per game, and are among the G-MAC's top defenses, ranking second in opponent field goal percentage (38.3%) and giving up just 64.1 points per game.
- Hillsdale has been sensational at home, with a perfect 7-0 record in Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena so far in 2025-26. The Chargers' record at home could have a big impact down the stretch, as five of Hillsdale's final eight conference games in February are at home with the Chargers looking to secure a G-MAC Tourney bid and make a big move in the standings.
