The Hillsdale College women's tennis team came close to a signature win on Saturday in Detroit, pushing the 22nd-ranked team in the nation, Wayne State, to the brink, but couldn't close out the upset in a 4-3 road loss.
Hillsdale got off to a great start by stunning the Warriors in doubles, taking the point to take an early edge in the match. Hillsdale's No. 2 doubles pairing of sophomore
Briana Rees and freshman
Dimitra Papastavrou won 7-5 against their Wayne State opponent, and the Chargers' No. 3 doubles team of senior
Isabella Spinazze and sophomore
Julia Zlateva closed out a 6-4 win as well.
In singles, however, Wayne State fought back, sweeping positions 1-4 to secure the victory. Hillsdale's Rees fought hard at No. 2 singles, even taking the first set 6-3 over one of the best players in the region, the Warriors' Martyna Szpakowska, but ended up falling in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Although they didn't affect the outcome of the match, Hillsdale finished strong with dominant wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Zlateva completed an undefeated day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wayne State's Shantala Uzcategui at No. 5 singles, and freshman
Esther Sura impressed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Warriors Rebecca Laynes at No. 6 singles.
Hillsdale is now 5-3 on the season and hosts Roosevelt next Sunday, March 8 at 10 a.m. looking to get back on track and snap a three-match losing streak. It's the Chargers final match before Hillsdale heads south to Texas for spring break, and a chance to reset and recalibrate ahead of that trip.
