The Hillsdale College men's tennis team fell victim to a tough Carson-Newman squad in a 6-1 defeat as the Chargers headed south for spring break matches this weekend.
Carson-Newman took the doubles point for an early lead in the match despite a solid win at No. 3 doubles by sophomores
Sam Plys and
Rintaro Goda, who took a hard-fought 7-5 victory.
In singles play, the Chargers were led by sophomore
Alex Cordero Lopez, who took down the Eagles' Giancarlo Rosario by a convincing score of 6-4, 6-1. Hillsdale put up a fight elsewhere, with freshman
Patrick Cretu and junior
Ellis Klanduch each forcing their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, to three sets, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
Hillsdale falls to 4-5 on the season and will continue south to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, where the Chargers will play two matches, against Mt. Olive on Sunday at 9:30 am, and against Quincy on Monday at noon, to complete Hillsdale's southern swing.
