The Hillsdale College men's tennis team fell to a tough opponent at home on Saturday, as visiting Wayne State, ranked 20th in the nation in NCAA DII, proved to be too much for the Chargers in a 6-1 defeat.
The Warriors, perennial contenders in the Midwest Region and with several recent trips to the NCAA Championships on their resume, cruised to victory in the doubles point and quickly clinched the match with straight-sets victories at 1 through 4 singles.
While it didn't affect the outcome of the match, Hillsdale was able to prevent the sweep with a win at No. 5 singles, as freshman
Patrick Cretu pulled out a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over Wayne State's Sam Knowles thanks to strong play in the second set tiebreak.
Hillsdale's
Alex Cordero Lopez also put up a tough fight for the Chargers at No. 6 singles, taking the first set and playing through three tiebreaks before ultimately falling to Wayne State's Harry Forsyth, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-10.
Hillsdale is now 3-4 on the year and will aim to snap a three-match losing streak next Sunday, March 8, as the Chargers host Roosevelt for a 2 p.m. match. It's Hillsdale's final outing before its annual spring break trip to South Carolina, and a chance to recapture momentum heading into that southern excursion.
