The Hillsdale College men's tennis team got back to .500 and snapped a three-match losing streak with a strong showing in a 6-1 win over Roosevelt at home on Sunday.
The Chargers took an early edge in the match against the Lakers by taking a hard fought doubles point. Hillsdale's top team of
Ellis Klanduch and
Ryan Papazov won a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, and the Chargers' freshman pairing of
Patrick Cretu and
Jackson Clements pulled out a tight tiebreaker 8-6 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point and a 1-0 lead in the match.
With and advantage gained, Hillsdale quickly clinched the match with four straight set victories in singles play. Papazov kicked things off with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Roosevelt's Juan Caicedo at No. 1 singles, and fellow sophomore
Sam Plys won by an equally lopsided score at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3 over Roosevelt's Justus Peters. Cretu also took a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles for the Chargers over the Lakers' Chakib Madcur, and junior
Ellis Klanduch won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles as well over the Laker's Lluc Sierra Mascaro.
Clements closed out the victory with a 7-5, 6-1 match at No. 6 singles over Roosevelt's DeMille Scarabello, pulling away in the second set after a close first set.
Hillsdale improves to 4-4 with the win and will head south for three matches starting next weekend over spring break before returning to start G-MAC play. The Chargers will face Carson-Newman in Tennessee on March 13, before continuing on for two matches on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina as part of the PTR Spring Tennis Fest.Â
