The Hillsdale College women's tennis team put up a solid fight against one of the top teams in NCAA DII during its spring break trip to Texas on Monday, but fell 6-1 to host and 12th-ranked Midwestern State.
While Hillsdale only earned one point, it made the Mustangs work for the victory with several close matches. While MSU took the doubles point to start the match, Hillsdale got a win at No. 1 doubles from
Ane Dannhauser and
Briana Rees, who won 6-3 over a Mustangs doubles team that featured the third-ranked singles player in the nation, Selin Sepken.
In singles play, freshman
Esther Sura got a big win for the Chargers at No. 5 singles, taking a marathon match that went three sets and included a tiebreak 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 over MSU's Jasmine Crain. Hillsdale also came close in several other singles matches, as Dannhauser forced a third set in a 5-7, 6-0, 1-6 loss at No. 2 singles and sophomore
Julia Zlateva played in two tiebreaks in a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) loss at No. 4 singles.
Hillsdale falls to 6-4 overall with the loss and has another tough match tomorrow, as the Chargers battle a NCAA Division I foe in Tarleton State in a match at noon ET in Stephenville, Texas.
