Scouting the Opposition
Walsh: The Cavaliers are fully back after two straight losing seasons, winning the G-MAC regular season title by two full games and carrying the number one seed into this week's conference tournament as the clear favorite to take the G-MAC's NCAA Tournament auto bid.
Â
Veteran coach Jeff Young is finding success with a very similar lineup to past seasons, as five of the Cavaliers' top seven scorers last year are among the team's top six scorers in 2025-26. Akron transfer Kobe Michell continues to excel in his second season in North Canton, while Zack Oddo, Matthew Biddell, and Kaleb Schaffer all play important roles as in last season.
Â
Two big changes for the Cavaliers are the improvement of sophomore guard Quintero Barnett, who's gone from a supporting role to leading the team and ranking in the top seven in the G-MAC in scoring in his second season, and freshman post Brayden Gross, who's given the team significant scoring punch in the paint. Barnett is a strong contender for G-MAC Player of the Year, while Gross has a solid claim to G-MAC Freshman of the Year honors as well.
Â
Walsh has one of the G-MAC's top scoring offenses, at 86.1 points per game, but it's a solid defense, conceding just 70.1 points per game despite the pace the Cavaliers play at, that separated Walsh from the other conference contenders. Walsh's 16 point differential leads the G-MAC by six full points and is the eighth-best in the nation.
Â
Hillsdale is 15-13 all-time against Walsh, including a sweep of the Cavaliers in 2024-25, but Walsh swept the Chargers this season with double-digit wins in Hillsdale and on the road, and will be looking for a third victory on Tuesday.

Scouting the Chargers
By the slimmest of margins, Hillsdale earned its spot in an ninth consecutive G-MAC Tournament with a win over Northwood on Saturday and help elsewhere. Now, the Chargers aim to become the third eight seed in a row to upset the top seed in the first round of the G-MAC Tournament.
Hillsdale is a balanced and deep team offensively, led by senior point guard
Ashton Janowski. The team's leading scorer, Janowski is approaching 1,000 points for his career and shooting more efficiently from the floor than ever, with a career-high 34.8% shooting percentage from 3-point range.
Along with Janowski, the Chargers are also leaning heavily on a solid four-man rotation in the post. Junior
Caleb Glaser and sophomore
Connor Stonebraker had great months down the stretch with Glaser moving into the starting lineup after ranking second on the team in scoring and leading the Chargers rebounding, while Stonebraker ranks third in points per game. Hillsdale also has gotten major contributions in the paint from
Garrett Bolte and
CJ Yarian, who bring different skillsets to the table that allow the Chargers to mix and match for the situation.
On the wing, freshman
Braylon Morris has become a key offensive threat, and moved into the starting lineup in early February, averaging 8.7 points and shooting 41.1% from deep, while redshirt freshman
Tommy Morgan continues to make significant contributions at both ends of the floor in his first season of action as well.
Guard
Cole McWhinnie is posting career highs for the Chargers as well and is an important connector in the starting lineup for Hillsdale, while freshman
Paxton Giertz also has carved out a role off the bench on the perimeter.
Returning for his third season as head coach of Hillsdale College is
Keven Bradley, who has a 49-37 record so far leading the Chargers. Bradley is joined by two new assistants,
Jackson McLaughlin and
Braeden Proctor, for the 2025-26 campaign.

Other Notes
- Hillsdale kept its streak of G-MAC tourney qualifications intact, edging out Cedarville by .01 points in the PRS for the eighth and final spot. The Chargers are 6-8 all-time in the G-MAC Tournament in eight prior trips, including making the finals in 2018. Hillsdale has advanced past the quarterfinal round in five of eight trips to the tournament. This is just the second time Hillsdale will play on the road in the quarterfinal round, having lost to Thomas More 72-71 in its only road quarterfinal contest in 2024.
- The eighth seed has a storied history in the G-MAC Tournament, as the last team to make the tourney has pulled a quarterfinal upset of the regular season champion and top-ranked team in three out of the seven years the G-MAC has held an eight-team tourney. The eight seed has advanced in each of the past two seasons, 2023-24 and 2024-25. Additionally, while they weren't an eight seed, Cedarville, the last team to make the six-team tournament in 2022 pulled multiple upsets and reached the tournament final.
- As a senior captain and Hillsdale's only returning starter from last season, Ashton Janowski is linchpin player for the Chargers. He's been a key player again for the Chargers in 2025-26, leading Hillsdale with 11.4 points per game and burying a game-winning shot with one second to play in a 74-72 victory over Ohio Christian on Nov. 22. One area of growth for Janowski in his final season is 3-point shooting, as his 34.8% mark from beyond the arc is a significant improvement on his sophomore and junior seasons with the Chargers.
- Junior Caleb Glaser was inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 3 against Malone and has proven that was a wise decision with a string of impressive performances, including a 19 point, nine rebound effort against Walsh on Jan. 5 and a career best 22-point performance against Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 19 in a critical win for Hillsdale. Always a high-energy player throughout his career, Glaser is currently second on the team in scoring (11.2 points per game) and first in rebounding (5.8 per game). He has 11 double-figure scoring games in his last 14 appearances for the Chargers.
- Freshman Braylon Morris has flashed serious potential off the bench for the Chargers to start his career at Hillsdale, with a pair of 20-plus point games in victories for the Chargers so far. Morris poured in 28 points in a double-OT win over Lake Erie on Dec. 6, and led Hillsdale with 22 points in a win over Truman State on Dec. 17. In both victories he shot over 70% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range. He's been hot recently, with six double-figure scoring contests in his last 10 games, and has moved into the starting lineup for the Chargers for the most recent eight contests.
- Senior Cole McWhinnie is a veteran leader for the Chargers and is playing a key role on the perimeter for Hillsdale in his first season as a starter. McWhinnie is averaging a career high in points while also ranking first among Hillsdale players in assists (3.5 per game, seventh in the G-MAC) and steals (0.8 per game). He also ranks second in the G-MAC among all players in assist to turnover ratio (2.8). McWhinnie had a great game against Ohio Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 7, with a career high 17 points and four made 3-pointers, and also contributed 14 critical points in a key home win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 19.
- Redshirt sophomore Connor Stonebraker has had big games off the bench this season for the Chargers, scoring 23 points in a Jan. 15 win over Cedarville and adding 14 more in a Jan. 17 contest at Tiffin. A third year player who's seeing consistent action for the Chargers for the first time, Stonebraker is flashing his versatile skill set and scoring ability, currently ranking third for the Chargers with 9.5 points per game on the season. He moved into the starting lineup for the first time against Tiffin on Feb. 5 and finished with 14 points, and was Hillsdale's leading scorer on Feb. 14 at Ashland with 17.
- A veteran presence with many games under his belt, center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian ranks second for Hillsdale with 5.6 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.3 assists per game as well. Yarian also ranks fourth in the G-MAC averaging 0.9 blocks per game and is on track to surpass 500 rebounds for his career before his time at Hillsdale is over, an impressive milestone that only a few Chargers have reached.
