The Hillsdale College women's tennis team suffered its fifth straight loss in excruciatingly close fashion on Saturday at home, as the Chargers battled #44 Tiffin to the end but fell to the ranked Dragons 4-3 in a heartbreaker.
Hillsdale got off to a great start, rallying to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead in the match. Hillsdale's top doubles team of
Ane Dannhauser and
Briana Rees pulled off a 6-4 victory over a tough Tiffin squad at No. 1 doubles, and the Chargers' No. 3 doubles team of freshmen
Dimitra Papastavrou and
Esther Sura rallied from a 5-2 deficit with five straight game victories to pull off a 7-5 win and secure the doubles point.
The Chargers had the early edge but couldn't hold it, as Tiffin took each of the first four singles matches to score the four points necessary to secure the victory. Hillsdale did pick up two victories at No.5 singles from sophomore
Julia Zlateva, who won 7-5, 6-2 over Erna Brdarevic of Tiffin, and from Sura at No. 6 singles, who pulled out a thrilling 6-3, 6-7 (6), 10-3 victory in three sets over Tiffin's Imani Shah.
Hillsdale was close to taking the match, as it went to three sets in one of the four singles matches it lost, and had a second set tiebreak in another, but couldn't pull out the victory.
Hillsdale is now 6-8 overall, 0-3 in the G-MAC, but of their five match losing streak, four of the losses have come to teams ranked in the top 50 and the fifth came to a NCAA Division I opponent. The Chargers will look to turn thing around next week when Hillsdale hits the road to take on Ashland at 2 p.m. on Friday April 3, and Cedarville at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.
