The Hillsdale College baseball team bounced back from a tough Saturday with a critical 5-4 win over Ohio Dominican on Sunday at home, splitting the weekend series.
Rocco Tenuta drove in
Gaard Swenson to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the Chargers on a sacrifice fly, breaking a 4-4 deadlock after the Panthers had scored twice to tie up the game in the top of the inning.
Swenson's leadoff triple to start the bottom of the seventh proved to be the deciding hit in the game, getting the sophomore leadoff hitter in position for Tenuta to drive him in with a fly ball to the outfield.
Rallying from giving up two runs in the top of the seventh, Chargers reliever
Patrick MacLean finished the game strong in the final two innings, allowing just two baserunners in the eighth and ninth innnings while striking out three batters and securing the victory for Hillsdale.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, ODU took a 2-0 lead with two RBI doubles in the top of the third inning. Hillsdale surged ahead in the bottom of the third with three runs on a RBI single by Tenuta and a two-run single by
Tyler Sowers, then added another run on a RBI single by
Jake Figman in the bottom of the fifth.
ODU tied up the game in the top of the seventh, however, to set up late inning drama.
Swenson was 2 for 3 with a triple and a stolen base to lead the Chargers at the plate, and
Nolan Coppens added two hits as well as Hillsdale scored five runs on seven hits.
Logan McLaughlin had another strong start on the mound for Hillsdale, going six innings with three strikeouts, no walks and two earned runs conceded, while MacLean earned his second win of the season with three innings of relief.
The victory improves Hillsdale to 11-14 overall, 7-5 in G-MAC play. The Chargers are a game back of Ashland for second place in the G-MAC North Division, and a game ahead of in-state rival Northwood, setting up a big conference series with the Timberwolves next weekend as both teams jockey for position in the G-MAC standings. First, however, Hillsdale faces Davenport out of the GLIAC for a midweek contest at home on Wednesday, scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET.
