The Hillsdale College men's tennis team couldn't get the better of another tough opponent on Saturday, falling to G-MAC favorite and 20th-ranked Tiffin 6-1 at home.
It was Hillsdale's third straight match against a nationally ranked opponent, with the Chargers falling in all three contests.
The Chargers dropped the doubles point to a strong Dragons squad despite a good showing from Hillsdale's No. 1 doubles pairing of
Henry Hammond and
Ryan Papazov, who took a 6-4 victory.
In singles play, sophomore
Alex Cordero Lopez picked up Hillsdale's lone victory with an impressive win at No. 4 singles, beating Tiffin's Lorenzo Perucchini 6-1, 6-4. Although the Chargers fell 6-1, Hillsdale actually came close to pulling the upset, with Hammond at No. 3 singles,
Rintaro Goda at No. 5 singles, and
Jackson Clements at No. 6 singles all pushing their matches to a third set before coming up just short against the Dragons.
Hillsdale is now 5-8 overall, 0-3 in conference play but the Chargers have faced the top three contenders for the G-MAC title in a row to start the conference schedule. The schedule eases up a bit from here, as Hillsdale hits the road looking to rebound with matches against Ashland on Friday at 2 p.m. and Cedarville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
