The Hillsdale College women's tennis team is heating up at the perfect time.
With the G-MAC Tournament just a week away, the Chargers rolled past host Ursuline 7-0 on Friday afternoon for the team's fifth straight victory, improving to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in G-MAC play.
Hillsdale didn't drop a game in claiming the doubles point, with its No. 1 team of junior
Ane Dannhauser and sophomore
Briana Rees, its No. 2 team of senior
Isabella Spinazze and freshman
Esther Sura, and its No. 3 team of sophomore
Julia Zlateva and freshman
Dimitra Papastavrou all claiming 6-0 victories.
The Chargers also were perfect in each of the first four singles matches to clinch the victory, with Dannhauser at No. 1 singles, Rees at No. 2 singles, Zlateva at No. 3 singles, and Papastavrou at No. 4 singles all taking 6-0, 6-0 victories as well.
Sura won a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles and
Isabella Spinazze a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles as well for the Chargers to complete the sweep.
The victory gives Hillsdale momentum heading into an important match at Walsh on Saturday to finish out the regular season. The two teams are close in the standings and most likely going to play twice in the next week -- first in the season finale, and then again in the #4 vs #5 quarterfinal match in the G-MAC Tournament next weekend in Owensboro, Kentucky. Saturday's match will give the Chargers a chance to build confidence against the Cavaliers ahead of that potential postseason meeting.
