Boonzaaijer's school record highlights home Tune-Up meet showing

In her first outdoor track and field meet with the Hillsdale College women's track and field meet, freshman Sofia Boonzaaijer made a big statement.

Boonzaaijer shattered the Hillsdale program record in the discus by more than a meter to place second at Hillsdale's home Tune-Up Invite, putting herself immediately into All-American contention with her first official collegiate throw.

The freshman had a top mark of 49.09 meters, breaking the program record of 47.24 meters set by teammate Amelia Lutz at last weekend's GINA Relays. Boonzaaijer's throw was not only a school record at Hillsdale, but an NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark that ranks 14th in the nation currently, and is also the third-farthest discus throw in G-MAC history.

In truth, Boonzaaijer didn't come out of nowhere, as she made the NCAA DII Indoor Championships this past winter in the shot put in her first season of competition indoors as well. Still, Boonzaaijer is showing she'll be a legitimate contender for high honors at the Outdoor Championships in May very early in her career. Behind Boonzaaijer in the discus, Ella Schafer placed fifth with a personal best throw of 41.14 meters, and freshman Isabel Rozeveld took sixth with a personal best throw of 39.42 meters as well.

Hillsdale had another all-time great throw in program history in the javelin on Friday night, the first day of the meet, as freshman Devan Foster won and set a new personal best with a throw of 43.97 meters, the second-furthest throw in Hillsdale history behind only All-American Eden Little, and a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark ranking 28th nationally. Fellow freshman Lilly Grubbs also made a huge splash, placing third in the javelin with a mark of 39.76 meters, making her the seventh-best women's javelin thrower in Hillsdale College history.

The Chargers also had a strong showing in the hammer throw on Friday, where Olivia Newsome won with a mark of 52 meters, Rozeveld took second with a new personal best of 51.85 meters, and Regan Wight placed fourth with a personal best throw of 51.35 meters, and in the shot put, where Amelia Lutz took second with a throw of 15.20 meters, Boonzaaijer placed third with a throw of 13.80 meters, and Rozeveld took eighth with a throw of 12.22 meters.

Hillsdale had two more athletes earn new top 10 all-time marks on the weekend. Freshman Adella Schmoll took fourth in the long jump with a new personal best leap of 5.51 meters, moving into 10th all-time at Hillsdale, with teammate Baelyn Zitzmann placing sixth with a mark of 5.24 meters and Katie Kennedy placing seventh with a mark of 5.22 meters as well.

Zitzmann also had a huge personal best in the preliminary heats of the 100m hurdles, running a time of 14.80, the 10th fastest mark all-time at Hillsdale in the event. Zitzmann eventually placed seventh in the final in 15.08, behind teammate Sarah Chappelle, who took third in 14.49.

Senior Lucy Minning had a strong day for the Chargers, claiming first in the 100m dash in 11.93, and also winning the 200m dash in 24.72. Teammate Anna Lamoreaux was third in the 200m dash in 25.72 and fifth in the 100m dash in 12.50, and Schmoll took sixth in the 200m dash in a personal best time of 26.01 and Evelyn Overlease placed seventh in a personal best time of 26.04 as well for Hillsdale.

Tara Townsend won the pole vault for the Chargers, clearing 4.03 meters, and Katie Kennedy placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.68 meters as well. Gianna Lodice was runner-up in the 400m hurdles for Hillsdale with a personal best time of 1:06.74, ahead of teammate Nola Hipkins in fourth in 1:07.66, and Ameera Wilson placed third in the 800m dash with a personal best time of 2:22.52.

Hillsdale placed two in the 400m dash, with Francesca Federici taking third in a season-best time 56.97 and Jessica Church placing fifth in 58.34, and Aubrie Wilson took fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.54 meters as well.

With the Tune-Up meet in the books, there's nothing between the Chargers and the G-MAC Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted at the Jim and Sallie McGinnis Track and Field Facility at Hayden Park on the Hillsdale College campus. The Charger women are looking to improve on a third-place finish at the outdoor championships in 2025 and contend for the program's first outdoor title, since 2022. The meet takes place over three days, beginning on Wednesday, April 29. You can find the full meet schedule on hillsdalechargers.com.
