In her first official meet outdoors for the Hillsdale College women's track and field team,
Sofia Boonzaaijer didn't waste any time making her presence felt.
Her first throw in the discus was record-setting, and earned her G-MAC Field Athlete of the Week honors for the first time, the G-MAC office announced on Monday afternoon.
Boonzaaijer shattered the Hillsdale program record in the discus by more than a meter to place second at Hillsdale's home Tune-Up Invite, putting herself immediately into All-American contention with her first official collegiate throw.
The freshman had a top mark of 49.09 meters, breaking the program record of 47.24 meters set by teammateÂ
Amelia Lutz at last weekend's GINA Relays. Boonzaaijer's throw was not only a school record at Hillsdale, but an NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark that ranks 14th in the nation currently, and is also the third-farthest discus throw in G-MAC history.
In truth, Boonzaaijer didn't come out of nowhere, as she made the NCAA DII Indoor Championships this past winter in the shot put in her first season of competition indoors as well. Still, Boonzaaijer is showing she'll be a legitimate contender for high honors at the Outdoor Championships in May very early in her career.Â
Next up for Boonzaaijer and the Chargers is the all-important 2026 G-MAC Outdoor Championships, contested at Hillsdale's home track, the Jim and Sallie McGinnis Track and Field Facility at Hayden Park, this Wednesday through Friday. The Charger women are looking to improve on a third-place finish at the outdoor championships in 2025 and contend for the program's first outdoor title, since 2022. The meet takes place over three days, beginning on Wednesday, April 29. You can find the full meet schedule on hillsdalechargers.com.
