Armstrong Blanks Battlers as Chargers Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1 box score - Hillsdale 5, Alderson-broaddus 0

Game 2 box score - Alderson-Broaddus 6, Hillsdale 4

March 10, 2013 - Sophomore pitcher Shane Armstrong pitched his way out of trouble several times, and pitched his way into his first win of the season Sunday afternoon.

Armstrong tossed five shutout innings, and Jon Hanrahan contributed two strong innings of relief work as the Hillsdale College baseball team defeated Alderson-Boraddus 5-0 in the first game of their doubleheader at Toledo's Mercy Field. The Battlers came back to win game 2, 6-4.

Hillsdale, off to its best start in 10 years, is 5-3 on the season and next plays in Florida next week.

Armstrong's clutch pitching, plus clean work in the field by the Charger defense, were the keys to the win. They forced A-B to strand 11 batters in the game. This was Hillsdale's first shutout win in nearly a full year (March 17, 2012). Armstrong struck out five batters in five innings of work.

While on offense, Hillsdale got a little something from everyone, as six different players recorded base hits and five different player scored runs. The Chargers plated two in the second and third innings to give Armstrong a nice cushion to work with.

Senior Mike Vanchieri, freshman Geordy Smith and freshman Tad Sobieszczanski each had a hit, RBI and a run scored.

The Battlers took an early lead in game 2, and led 6-2 in the sixth before the Chargers mounted a comeback. Freshman Lincoln Reed went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Sobieszczanki and Smith each had a hit and a run scored.

Playing four games in his hometown of Toledo, Sobieszczanski had a sizzling weekend at the plate, going 7-for-11 against the Battlers. He is one of several freshmen who have contributed to the Chargers' good start to the season. Six of the nine starters in the batting order were freshmen on Sunday.
