March 9, 2013 - The baseball teams from Hillsdale College and Alderson-Broaddus College were very evenly matched Saturday afternoon. Both games in their non-league doubleheader were decided by one run, with the decisivie run coming in each team's respective final at bat.

A-B defeated Hillsdale 2-1 in the first of Saturday's doubleheader, with the Chargers coming back to post a 4-3 win in eight innings in the second game. These two teams will meet for another twinbill at noon Sunday at Toledo's Mercy Field.

Senior pitcher Kris Morris (pictured) threw an effective game, but had to take the loss. He gave up just one earned run in seven innings on the mound for Hillsdale. He scattered six hits and had three strikeouts compared to just one walk in his start.

Hillsdale took a 1-0 lead when Zak Northrup's sacrifice fly scored Connor Bartlett in the third inning. A-B came back to tie the game in the fourth, and the game's pitchers dueled from there until the seventh.

There were several standout performances from Hillsdale in the dramatic 4-3 win in game 2. It started with winning pitcher Dan Pochmara, who came on in relief of freshman starter Lucas Hamelink. Pochmara tossed three perfect innings and had three strikeouts, setting Hillsdale up to win the game in extra innings.

Freshman Tad Sobieszczanski, playing in his hometown of Toledo, went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and his first collegiate RBI. He scored the game-winning run when freshman Geordy Smith blasted a double to centerfield, easily scoring his teammate to give Hillsdale the Saturday split.

Sophomore Vinny Delicata tied the game at 3-3 with his first collegiate home run, coming in the fourth inning. The timing of the homer was key not only because it tied the game, but Alderson-Broaddus had erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead earlier in the inning.

Northrup also had two hits and scored a run in game 2 for the Chargers.
