Junior pitcher Shane Armstrong shut out the #12-ranked Grand Valley State University baseball team, but the Chargers could not push a run across in a 4-0 loss to the Lakers at Adrian College.
It was the GLIAC opener for both teams. Hillsdale is 2-13 overall and 0-1 in the conference, and will travel to North Canton, Ohio this weekend for a three-game series with Walsh University.
Armstrong dropped his season earned run average by nearly three full runs in his six-inning, zero-run stint on the hill. He struck out a season-high seven batters and did a masterful job of getting out of jams. He got out of back-to-back bases loaded jams in the second and third innings, helping to keep the Chargers in it.
GVSU scored what turned out to be the game-winning run on an RBI groundout with no outs in the seventh. The Lakers scored three unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning when Hillsdale committed two infield errors, each coming with two outs.
Junior Nolan Breymaier had two of Hillsdale's three hits in the game. Outfielder Connor Bartlett had the other. All three of Hillsdale's hits were singles.
