The bats were red hot for the #18-ranked Grand Valley State baseball team Wednesday afternoon.

The Lakers scored 25 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of Hillsdale College at Grand Rapids' Davenport University, winning 12-1 and 13-8. The Chargers are now 5-15 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC, and head back to Canton, Ohio this weekend for a three-game series against Malone University. The Lakers are 6-0 in the GLIAC.

In Wednesday's first game, the Lakers scored five times in the second inning and four more times in the sixth to win going away. GVSU drew four walks in the first two innings of the game, which allowed them to build an early lead.

Sophomore Luke Ortel went 2-for-4 and drove in the Chargers' only run of the opener.

Game two started out looking like another Laker rout, but Hillsdale showed some resolve by narrowing the gap considerably late in the ballgame.

GVSU scored five runs in the first inning, four of them coming on a two-out grand slam home run. Three more runs in the second inning gave Grand Valley State an 8-1 lead entering the third inning.

But Hillsdale came back, pushing three runs across in the fifth and two more in the sixth to suddenly cut a large deficit to two runs, 10-8. But the Lakers countered with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to establish the final margin.

Hillsdale's offense heated up on a day when the wind chill factor at first pitch was 18 degrees. Ortel continued his strong play at the plate by going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 more driven in. Junior Nolan Breymaier, playing his best stretch of offensive baseball in his career, went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Sophomore Lincoln Reed had a double and scored twice, while Vinny Delicata had a run driven in and a run scored.
