MONDAY RECAP
The Charger baseball team took two of three from the Malone University Pioneers in a Sunday-Monday three-game series in Canton, Ohio. The two teams played a doubleheader Monday to wrap up the set.
Hillsdale won the opener 6-3 on the strength of another quality outing from freshman pitcher Jake Lee and good productivity from the top of the batting order.
The Pioneers came back to win the nightcap 8-4 thanks to some early-inning offense.
The Chargers are now 7-15 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC. The team treks over to Columbus for a three-game series against Ohio Dominican University starting Tuesday afternoon.
In Monday's opener, Hillsdale jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held serve throughout. Sophomore Tad Sobieszczanski, back on the field after missing some games last week, got the team started with an RBI double, which followed a run-scoring single by Adam Ladzinski that brought home leadoff hitter Luke Ortel. The Chargers quickly added to the lead when Ladzinski used smart and aggressive baserunning to score on a fielding error, making it a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Hillsdale increased its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning when Lincoln Reed scored Nolan Breymaier with a sacrifice fly. Connor Bartlett then scored on another fielding error by the Pioneers, giving Lee all the support he would need.
Lee improved to a team-best 3-1 on the mound this season by going 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and four hits allowed. Senior Colin Gerish came in to get two crucial outs in the sixth inning, setting up closer Dan Pochmara to do his thing. Pochmara was dominant, striking out two of the three batters he faced for his third save of the season.
Sobieszczanski was 2-for-4 in the win, while Ortel had two more hits, scored once and drove in a run.
In the second game, Malone erased an early 1-0 deficit quickly, scoring three times in the first and two more in both the second and third innings to jump out to a big lead. The Chargers threatened to come back a few times, but stranded 11 runners on base in seven innings.
Sophomore Chris McDonald had another big day at the plate for the Chargers, smacking a double while going 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs batted in and one run scored. Sobieszczanski had two more hits, giving him a four-hit day for Hillsdale.
Reed belted in two runs while Ladzinski and Breymaier each had hits and a run scored.
SUNDAY RECAP
For the second straight outing, Hillsdale College senior pitcher Matthew Reck displayed ace-like stuff.
Reck faced four batters above the minimum in a 5-2 Charger win Sunday afternoon against Malone University at Thurmon Munson Field. Hillsdale, now winners of four of its past six, is 6-15 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC.
The two teams will play two seven-inning games Monday afternoon in Ohio, wrapping up the delayed series.
Reck was masterful, efficient and helpful, as Hillsdale began a stretch of six games in four days with the nine-inning victory. He was effective enough to get the bullpen a full day's rest heading into a very busy stretch of the schedule.
He allowed five hits and fanned two, improving his record to 2-2 on the season. The defense behind Reck also stepped up, turning two double plays in the win.
Malone scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first, but was shut out the rest of the way, allowing the Hillsdale offense to catch up and pass the Pioneers.
Hillsdale was held off the board until the top of the sixth, when sophomore Chris McDonald led off the inning with w double, and later scored on a sac fly by Connor Bartlett.
McDonald collected three hits on the day and continues to prove his value as one of the team's most improved hitters.
Bartlett figured prominently in the team's key three-run outburst in the eighth. His double, and subsequent Malone error, allowed Nolan Breymaier to score the game-tying run. Lincoln Reed followed by slicing a single up the middle to put the Chargers into the lead for good.
Bartlett was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in, while Vinny Delicata had a double and an RBI. Junior Adam Ladzinski added a hit and a run scored for the Chargers.
