The Hillsdale College baseball team kicked off a long homestand Wednesday afternoon with a 10-8 victory over Northwood University at Simpson Field. The win snapped the Chargers' three-game losing streak, but also completed a season sweep of the series versus the Timberwolves.
Hillsdale, now 12-24 overall and 10-11 in the GLIAC, will host Findlay for a three-day Easter Weekend series starting with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by a noon Saturday doubleheader.
The Chargers did a terrific job of stringing together hits, especially in the early innings, when they sprinted out to a 10-0 lead through five innings. Northwood did make the Chargers sweat it out a bit in the end, scoring five in the sixth and three more in the ninth. The Timberwolves had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the final inning, but sophomore pitcher Lucas Hamelink was able to get out of the jam, preserving the win.
Before the late-inning drama, Hillsdale took its biggest lead of the season with an impressive hitting display early on. Freshman Ethan Wiskur smacked a solo home run, and freshman Jake Lee (pictured) and sophomore Lincoln Reed each had two-run doubles to provide the big hits for the Chargers.
Sophomore Tad Sobieszczanski had a sacrifice fly RBI, and sophomores Luke Ortel and Connor Bartlett each drove in runs.
Sophomore Chris McDonald got the start on the mound and picked up his second win of the season, going 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks allowed. Sophomore Mitchell Gatt was very impressive in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief ball, striking out one batter. Gatt has battled injuries throughout his career, so his performance was another encouraging sign for the youthful pitching staff.
Reed was 2-for-5 with two doubles, 2 RBI and two runs scored. Lee, Ortel and Bartlett each had two hits in the win for the Chargers.
