There were some ups and downs for the Hillsdale College baseball team in Wednesday afternoon's twinbill with Saginaw Valley State University.
The Chargers played a strong all-around game in picking up a 4-2 win in the first game at Simpson Field. But SVSU took advantage of some opportunities in game two to earn a split with an 8-2 decision.
Hillsdale is now 14-28 overall and 12-14 in the GLIAC after the split. The team stays home this weekend, hosting Tiffin University in a three-game series starting at 1:00 Saturday.
In the game one win, sophomore Chris McDonald won his third game of the season with a clean, complete-game performance. He went the distance, allowing just five hits and two earned runs to improve to 3-0 as a pitcher on the season. He didn't walk a single batter and struck out two.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Chargers took the lead with runs in the second and third innings. SVSU answered, tying the game at 2 in the top of the fourth, only to see Hillsdale counter with the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fourth.
In that decisive inning, sophomore Lincoln Reed doubled to right center, and came around on a double by freshman Jake Lee, giving Hillsdale the lead for good. Lee returned to hitting duties in this game and had a terrific day, going 2-for-2 with adouble, 3 RBI and a run scored.
Each of the top seven hitters in Hillsdale's lineup had at least one hit. Sophomore Connor Bartlett was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Tad Sobieszczanski slammed his seventh double of the season, and scored a run.
In game two, the Charger bats were held to just one hit, as the Cardinals fashioned a 14-1 edge in hits in the game. The team's lone hit came on a solo home run by Sobieszczanski in the top of the second inning.
