This was big.
The Wayne State women's tennis team has been firmly entrenched at the top of the GLIAC standings for years. In its brief history, Hillsdale College's women's tennis team hadn't come close to beating the Warriors.
Until Friday. And this match was more than just "close."
Thanks to a dramatic win by freshman Madeline Bissett at No. 5 singles, the Chargers toppled the Warriors for the first time, 5-4, to wrap up the fall regular season at the Margot V. Biermann Athletic Center.
Hillsdale has clinched no worse than the No. 5 seed at the tournament thanks to the victory, and finishes the fall with a 7-4 conference record. The Chargers open postseason play at the conference tournament, held at the Midland Community Tennis Center, on Friday.
Bissett was playing the last match of the evening against Wayne State's Julia Kamenko with the teams tied 4-4. After losing the first set 6-3, Bissett rallied for a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker win in set two, and clinched the win for Hillsdale with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set.
Another drama-filled win was recorded by Hillsdale's No. 1 doubles team of freshman Halle Hyman and seniro Lindsay Peirce, who were 9-8 victors in their match. The No. 3 doubles team of Sydney Delp and Jada Bissett picked up an 8-5 win, giving Hillsdale a 2-1 lead following the completion of doubles play.
Freshman Corinne Prost was simply dominant in her win at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, giving the Chargers another crucial win in the matchup. Delp played her final singles home GLIAC match with heart and determination in a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
Matchups for the GLIAC Tournament will be announced at the end of the weekend.
