Last season, the Hillsdale College women's tennis team stunned a Walsh team that had beaten the Chargers less than a week prior to advance in the G-MAC Tournament.
This Thursday in Owensboro, Kentucky, the fifth-seeded Cavaliers flipped the script on Hillsdale, beating the fourth-seeded Chargers in a tight 4-3 match after falling to Hillsdale 4-2 in the regular season finale last Saturday.
Hillsdale got off to a great start, winning the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 victory by the Chargers' nationally-ranked doubles pairing of junior
Ane Dannhauser and sophomore
Briana Rees, and a 6-2 win by Hillsdale's No. 3 doubles team of
Julia Zlateva and Dimitria Papastavrou.
The good vibes continued for the Chargers, as Dannhauser crushed Walsh's Lina Starke, who had beaten her in the previous match, at No. 1 singles in a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Past that, however, Hillsdale couldn't maintain the momentum, as Walsh scored straight set victories at No. 2, 4 and 6 singles to seize the advantage, and pulled out a tight three-set victory at No. 3 singles to secure the upset victory.
Hillsdale freshman
Esther Sura also won her match at No. 5 singles over Walsh's Olesya Ivashchuk, 6-4, 7-6, but it wasn't enough to stem the tide when it turned against the Chargers in the match.
The Chargers finish the season at 12-9 overall, 6-3 in the G-MAC and now turn their attention to next season. Hillsdale will lose two senior contributors in
Megan Hackman and
Isabella Spinazze who played well for the Chargers and must be replaced, but return the rest of the lineup, including multi-time All-G-MAC honorees Dannhauser and Rees, another talented and experienced sophomore in Zlateva, and promising freshman who made immediate impacts on the Chargers lineup in Papastavrou and Sura, among others. Hillsdale will aim to turn the corner with its returning talent in 2026-27.
