SATURDAY RECAP

Game 3 box score: NU 3, HC 2

Game 4 box score: NU 6, HC 5

This one stung.

The Hillsdale College baseball team was in position to end its weekend trip to Northwood on a positive note. The Chargers held a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but surrendered five runs in the final two frames in a 6-5 loss to the Timberwolves in Midland.

Northwood won the opener between the teams 3-2, giving the Timberwolves a four-game weekend sweep of the Chargers. Hillsdale is now 8-20 overall and 3-9 in the GLIAC on the season.

In the nightcap, Hillsdale banged out 15 hits, second-most it's had in a game this season. All nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit, led by a 3-for-5 effort from junior Tad Sobieszczanski.

Nolan Breymaier, Michael O'Sullivan and Connor Bartlett each had two hits for Hillsdale.

Freshman pitcher Phil Carey turned in a tough performance on the mound, going 7 innings with 5 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 earned run allowed in the no-decision.

Saturday's opener was a low-scoring affair, as both pitchers worked efficiently in the game.

Charger freshman Will Kruse overcame a difficult first inning to toss 5 2/3 innings with three earned runs and six hits allowed. Both of Hillsdale's runs were scored via sacrifice fly, coming off the bats of sophomore Ethan Wiskur and Bartlett.

FRIDAY RECAP

Game 1 box score: NU 7, HC 5

Game 2 box score: NU 14, HC 4

The Hillsdale College baseball team lost the first two games of a four-game Easter Weekend series against Northwood University in Midland Friday evening.

A late comeback in game 1 fell just short in a 7-5 loss to the Timberwolves. NU took control early in game 2 and came away with a 14-4 victory. Northwood remained in first place in the GLIAC North Division, while Hillsdale fell to 8-18 overall with the losses.

After trailing 7-1 in the opener, the Chargers scored four times in the sixth inning to cut the six-run deficit to two. But it wouldn't be enough.

Senior infielder Vinny Delicata returned to the starting lineup with a nice offensive game in game 1, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Junior Tad Sobieszczanski had 2 RBI, while junior catcher Sean Bennett had a pair of hits.

Northwood dominated game 2, scoring three times in the second and fifth innings and five more times in the sixth.

Delicata scored two runs while Connor Bartlett and Jared Piper each had runs batted in for Hillsdale. Michael O'Sullivan was 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
