Box Score: Hillsdale 5, Walsh 4
Is it strange that the Hillsdale College men's tennis team keeps running into teams that are regionally ranked, or is it more impressive that the Chargers, a second-year program, keep beating them?
The latter.
Once again, Hillsdale toppled an opponent ranked in the Midwest Region when it beat Walsh University 5-4 in North Canton, Ohio Saturday afternoon. The win makes the Chargers 11-7 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC.
Hillsdale's sixth win in its past seven matches came by the slimmest of margins, but was also emblematic of a young team that is learning how to win close matches.
Freshman Charlie Adams was in the thick of it again, winning 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. He faced adversity after winning a tightly played first set, losing in the second but bouncing back to post a key third-set win.
Adams and Justin Hyman have been the hottest doubles team anywhere of late. They won for the ninth time in a row, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. The freshman-sophomore duo is starting to put itself among the very best doubles teams in the Midwest.
Milan Mirkovic and Julien Clouette were both double winners, winning as a doubles team as well as individually. Mirkovic blew out his opponent to the tune of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Clouette also earned a straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Together, they earned an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
