Box Score The Hillsdale College women's tennis team ran its winning streak to three straight matches with an exciting 4-3 victory over visiting Davenport on Saturday, taking a win that came down to the final match.
Hillsdale got off to the perfect start with a dominant showing in doubles, winning all three flights. Sophomore
Ane Dannhauser and senior
Courtney Rittel rolled to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, and juniors
Megan Hackman and
Isabella Spinazze blanked their opponents at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.
Libby McGivern and
Briana Rees took a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles as well as the Chargers claimed what ended up being a critical doubles point to the ultimate outcome.
Singles play was hard-fought. Needing three points to clinch the match, Hillsdale got a spirited victory from senior stalwart McGivern at No. 2 singles, who triumphed over Davenport's Amy Bloch in a tight 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 match that went the distance. Rees also took care of business for the Chargers with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Davenport's Skye Vandeleur at No. 3 singles, while the Panthers won at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to even the match at three-all.
That meant the deciding point came down to No. 6 singles, where Hackman came through for the Chargers, winning a hard-fought first set 7-5, then rolling to a 6-1 victory in the second set to clinch the match.
Hillsdale is now 3-1 overall, and faces a big challenge in another home contest tomorrow, Sunday, at 10 a.m. as the Chargers host Ferris State, a perennial contender in the GLIAC and in the Midwest Region.Â
