Box Score The Hillsdale College women's tennis team capped an excellent home weekend with a meaningful milestone on Sunday, taking down visiting Edinboro without dropping a set in a 7-0 victory. In the process, head coach
Nikki Walbright earned her 100th match victory as a college coach with the win over the Scots.
The Chargers won all three doubles matches in dominant fashion to claim the doubles point, with the No. 1 team of
Ane Dannhauser and
Courtney Rittel rolling to a 6-1 victory, and the No. 2 team of
Briana Rees and
Libby McGivern taking a 6-3 win. Hillsdale's No. 3 team of
Megan Hackman and
Isabella Spinazze finished off the sweep with a 6-0 victory as well.
The momentum from that victory carried over into strong singles play, as the Chargers won all six matches without letting an Edinboro player accumulate more than three game victories in a set. Dannhauser continued an undefeated start in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Edinboro's Cecilia Carayol,
Libby McGivern won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles over the Scots' Luciana Ponce, and freshman
Briana Rees took down Sofia Benito 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.Â
Senior
Courtney Rittel was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 4 singles,
Julia Zlateva took a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, and
Isabella Spinazze won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles as well for the Chargers.
The win helped Walbright reach a milestone. Walbright, who came out of retirement to guide the team for the 2024-25 campaign, had 98 wins when she first stepped aside following the 2021-22 season. The accomplishment is a meaningful one for Walbright, who took over when the women's tennis program was reinstated at Hillsdale in 2010, and built the team up from nothing into what it is today.
Hillsdale is now 2-1 overall and will look to keep rolling as the competition increases next week, beginning with a home match against in-state foe Davenport on Saturday, Feb. 15.
