The Hillsdale College men's tennis team guaranteed itself a winning record on the season, both overall and in conference play, with a 4-0 victory over visiting Ashland on Saturday in the regular season finale.
The Chargers are now 11-8 overall, and 5-3 in G-MAC play after sweeping the Eagles. Hillsdale won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point, with the Chargers' top duo of
Ellis Klanduch and
Henry Hammond taking a 6-3 victory. The other two matches were close calls, but Hillsdale's No. 2 pairing of
Eddie Bergelin and
Ryan Papazov won a 7-5 tiebreak to secure their match in thrilling fashion, and the Chargers' No. 3 doubles team of
Alex Cordero Lopez and
Rintaro Goda also won a hard-fought 7-5 match as well.
If doubles was tight, singles was no problem for the Chargers, as Hillsdale cruised to the three wins it needed to clinch the match. Papazov didn't drop a game in a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles for the Chargers over Batsomi Marobela, and
Ellis Klanduch at No. 2 singles and
Henry Hammond at No. 3 singles each won comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victories to give Hillsdale all the points it needed to secure the win.
Hillsdale now turns its focus to the G-MAC Tournament next week in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Chargers will be the four seed in the tournament and face a tough quarterfinal matchup on Thursday against fifth-seeded Walsh, who Hillsdale beat in a thrilling 4-3 match at home on March 30 in their only previous meeting. Repeating the feat won't be easy, but a young Chargers squad made up solely of freshmen and sophomores has improved by leaps and bounds throughout the season and should be a different team from that first meeting as well.
