Hillsdale made a big statement in a huge series at home over Easter weekend, becoming the first G-MAC team in 2025 to split with conference leader Northwood, a feat that opens up big possibilities for the Chargers as they hit the road to Tiffin this weekend. Taking three from the Dragons, coupled with likely results from around the rest of the league, would almost certainly lock Hillsdale into the G-MAC Tournament field ahead of the final series against current second place Ashland.
Tiffin won't make it easy, however. The Dragons may be in the bottom of the G-MAC North Division but have played a brutal schedule that includes series against the current top three teams in the G-MAC South Division. Tiffin showed how dangerous it could be at home with a split against Ashland two weeks ago, and will be playing like a desperate team with their G-MAC Tourney hopes likely riding on taking at three or more from the Chargers to stay alive.
Tiffin has a decent offense organized built around cleanup hitter Andrew Fairbrother, who's having an impressive season as one of the G-MAC's best power hitters, with 11 doubles, the second-most home runs in the conference with 12, and a team-leading 44 RBIs. Not just a big bat, Fairbrother also boasts a solid .461 on-base percentage. He's supported in the lineup by two high-average hitters, Griff Cady and leadoff hitter Ty Hatfield, who has a team-leading 16 doubles, and by infielders Cal Brazier and Aidan Grabowski, who have also been important bats for the Dragons in conference play.
The Dragons have struggled on the mound, with a 7.12 ERA that ranks 10
th in the G-MAC. Johnathon Ray and Scotty Adelman, two returning veterans, are Tiffin's top two weekend starters, with a combined 6-9 record and a combined ERA of roughly 6.80. Tiffin hasn't locked in its other two rotation pitchers, with Nick Feasel and Brandon Swope serving in the role the past two weekends. Out of the bullpen, Mason Brunecz has been Tiffin's top arm, along with Feasel and Swope when they're not starting, Trent Hedjes, Zach Johnson and Andrew Baileys. Tiffin's defense ranks ninth in the G-MAC in fielding percentage at .959, but just .008 percentage points behind third-place Hillsdale.
After narrowly missing the G-MAC Tournament in 2024, Hillsdale bid farewell to a massive senior class and 16 total players, while adding 15 new freshmen to the roster in a turnover that will reshape the program heading into the upcoming campaign. So far, the Chargers are on track to make a return to the G-MAC Tourney with two conference weekends remaining, and have a chance to accomplish their goal early with a strong road weekend.
So far, the Chargers have been led at the plate by senior
Zak Kent, who's having a breakout campaign in his final season with a team-leading .352 batting average, 19 extra base hits, including six home runs and a Chargers-best 42 RBI, while also earning G-MAC Player of the Week honors two weekends ago. Past Kent, the Chargers are leaning on youth offensively, with three freshmen performing well as every-day players. Outfielder
Tyler Sowers is off to an excellent start, hitting .333 with 14 extra base hits, and the Chargers hope to get him back after missing a few games recently with an injury First baseman
Will Lehman has 37 RBIs and also has won a G-MAC Player of the Week Award this season, and
Gaard Swenson has 16 extra base hits and a walk-off home run as well. Along with those four players, sophomore
Rocco Tenuta (.317, 35 RBIs, team best .457 OBP and four home runs) continues to produce, while
Aaron Jasiak has come on strong recently and is now batting .282 at shortstop for the Chargers.
On the mound, Hillsdale has a solid ace in sophomore
Daniel Higdon, who's got a 3.70 ERA and four wins, and can also turn to veteran
Brandon Scott, who has been the starting pitcher in two shutouts this season and has four wins, for solid outings as well. Hillsdale's two other starters, sophomore
Jacob Pallo and freshman
Gibson Cary, played starring roles this past weekend against Northwood, with Pallo earning G-MAC Pitcher of the Week honors thanks to a one-hitter. With Pallo and Cary's emergence, Hillsdale now has one of the more formidable starting rotations in the conference. Out of the bullpen,
Logan McLaughlin,
Hayden Hoffpauir and
Andrew George all have had strong appearances, while sophomore
Winston Delp, junior
Patrick MacLean and Jasiak have steadily improved and become important pieces out of the bullpen as well. Senior
Drew Erdei also has come on recently to give the Chargers another option in relief. Hillsdale's staff is backed up by a solid defense, with a .967 fielding percentage that ranks third in the G-MAC currently.
Historically, Tiffin has gotten the better of Hillsdale in their battles with each other dating back to their shared membership in the GLIAC in the early 2000s, with a 26-14 mark against the Chargers since 2011. Lately, however, Hillsdale has turned the tables on the Dragons, with wins in seven of their last eight meetings, including a 3-1 series victory in Hillsdale in 2024.
