The Hillsdale College men's tennis team saw the 2024-25 season come to a close in the G-MAC Tournament Quarterfinal round on Thursday, falling to fifth-seeded Walsh in a tight 4-3 match.
The Chargers racked up three singles wins to force the match to go the distance, but couldn't come back from an early deficit after losing the doubles point. Walsh took 6-3 victories at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure what ended up being the decisive point. The Chargers' No. 2 doubles team of
Ryan Papazov and
Eddie Bergelin were in a tight 5-5 match when the point was clinched.
In singles play, both of Hillsdale's players with previous G-MAC Tourney experience won their matches to give the Chargers a chance.
Ellis Klanduch took a 6-1, 7-5 victory, holding on late, over Ethan Milgan at No. 2 singles, and
Henry Hammond gutted out a hard fought first set to beat Joan Dasi 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles as well for Hillsdale.
Eddie Bergelin got the Chargers within a point of winning with a marathon 7-6, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles over Nicholas Strohle, but Hillsdale couldn't pull out the one additional match it needed in singles play to keep its season alive.
While the 2024-25 season comes to a close earlier than the Chargers would have liked, the campaign still was a positive one for Hillsdale, which finishes the season 11-9 overall. As one of the youngest teams in the country, with no juniors or seniors on the roster, the Chargers exceeded expectations with an above .500 record and a top-four finish in the G-MAC regular season. With all seven players slated to return next year and additional reinforcements joining the team in a two-player freshman class this fall, Hillsdale looks like a team on the rise and potentially one to be reckoned with in the future as other programs deal with graduation losses and other departures over the summer.
