The Hillsdale College women's tennis team saw its G-MAC Tournament run brought to an end in the semifinal round on Friday, falling to second-seeded Tiffin 4-0 in a match played indoors at Centre Court in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Although Hillsdale was shut out in the loss, the Chargers put up a fight. Hillsdale lost the doubles point but Tiffin clinched it on a narrow 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles despite a tough fight from
Isabella Spinazze and
Julia Zlateva. The Chargers also were in the No. 2 doubles match, as
Courtney Rittel and
Libby McGivern had battled to a 5-5 tie when the match was halted due to the result being determined.
In singles play, sophomore
Ane Dannhauser battled but fell to Tiffin's Jemimah Choi in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-5, while freshman
Briana Rees won the first set against Anaelle Lepinay at No. 3 singles 6-0 but couldn't hold off the Dragons senior who took the next two sets to take the match. Those wins, coupled with a win at No. 2 singles, allowed Tiffin to finish the match without involving Hillsdale's 4, 5, and 6 singles players.
Hillsdale falls to 14-9 with the loss, and now waits for the announcement of the NCAA DII Tournament field on May 6 to see if it has snagged an at-large bid to the tournament. In the most recent NCAA DII Regional Rankings, the Chargers were on the outside looking in, ranked eighth with a field of seven selected for the tourney. Hillsdale will hope its quarterfinal victory and results elsewhere allow the Chargers to move into the top seven.
