The Hillsdale College women's tennis team finished an undefeated opening weekend with a well-earned 5-2 victory over visiting Michigan Tech on Saturday at the Biermann Athletic Center.
The Huskies put up a tough fight, but Hillsdale's depth and strong play in critical moments in the match proved decisive as the Chargers followed up a 7-0 win over Spring Arbor on Friday with another victory.
Hillsdale started the match by seizing the doubles point. The Chargers' top team of junior
Ane Dannhauser and senior
Megan Hackman seized control of the match midway through and pulled away for a 6-3 victory, while Hillsdale's No. 2 doubles team of sophomore
Briana Rees and senior
Isabella Spinazze were dominant from start to finish in a 6-0 victory that gave Hillsdale an early 1-0 lead.
The Chargers found themselves in several hard battles in singles play. Dannhauser saw off a strong challenge at No. 1 singles by Michigan Tech's Alexandra Nikonenko, getting stronger the deeper into the match she got in a 7-5, 6-3 victory that completed a 4-0 weekend. At No. 2 singles, Rees also passed a similarly stiff test, taking a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 victory over the Huskies' Bella Bigari with a strong finish to the third set.
The strength of Hillsdale's lineup proved critical in the victory. Sophomore
Julia Zlateva clinched the match at No. 5 singles with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory over Michigan Tech's Emily Rose, and freshman
Esther Sura also looked impressive in a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Huskies' Anamarija Ukic.
Hillsdale is off to a 2-0 start and will pick back up next weekend with two more matches, starting at home on Saturday, February 7 at 3 p.m. against Goshen.
