Chargers wrap up fall with fifth place finish at Nemacolin Invite

The Hillsdale College men's golf team put together two rounds that were competitive with the top teams at this week's Intercollegiate at Nemacolin, but struggles in the second round kept the Chargers from contending for first place and forced them to settle for a fifth place finish to wrap up the fall.

Hillsdale finished the first round on Monday with a four-over 292 that was good for second place, and shot a one-over 289 that was in the mix in the final round on Wednesday, but a 308 in round two on Tuesday proved to be too much to overcome as the Chargers finished with a 54-hole total of 889, two strokes behind Wheeling in fourth place. The event was held at the exclusive Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, with an elite nine-team field that included four top 50-ranked squads in the nation.

Sophomore John Cassiday had one of his best collegiate performances, carding an even par 72 on day one and shooting a three-under 69 with four birdies and 13 pars in the final round to move up to a tie for 13th place with a 72-78-69=219. Cassiday was in the top 10 performers in the invite in Par 3 scoring, playing Par 3s over the three days at even par, and in total birdies. He also had the second fewest number of bogeys in the field with just six across the three rounds, along with three doubles.

Close behind Cassiday was junior Jackson Piascek, who shot a 71-78-72 with two under or even par rounds to finish tied for 18th overall at 221 for the event. Senior Oliver Marshall shot a 73-76-74= 223 to finish tied for 23rd, freshman Anthony Stouder was tied for 31st with a 76-76-74=226 for the Chargers and Parker Stalcup finished tied for 51st with a 77-81-77=235.

Along with Hillsdale's scoring five, two other Chargers played the course as individuals. Andrew Irvine took 39th, shooting a 76-75-78=229, and Ryan O'Rourke placed 47th with a 78-78-77=233.

Hillsdale will now head into the winter break looking to train and improve before the critical spring campaign that includes both the G-MAC Championship and NCAA Super Regional. The next time Hillsdale will hit the course in competition is at the Oldfield Intercollegiate on February 21, hosted by the University of South Carolina-Beaumont at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina.
