What a difference a week can make.

After struggling in its season opening tournament last week at The Meadows, the Hillsdale College men's golf team came back with a vengeance at the UIndy Invitational hosted at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, Indiana on Monday ant Tuesday.

The Chargers put together a focused and top-notch performance from start to finish, shooting 17-under par to finish in third place in the 17-team field with a 281-284-282=847.

Leading the way was an all-time performance by Hillsdale senior Oliver Marshall, who placed fourth overall with the best 54-hole performance in modern program history. Marshall shot a 69-67-70=206 to finish 10-under par, breaking the program record for a 54-hole score of 9-under 207 set by Joel Pietila in the 2017 NCAA Central/Midwest Regional. 

Fueling Marshall's performance was a stellar showing on Par 4's. The Florida native was nine-under par on Par 4 holes for the three rounds at Broadmoor Country Club, two strokes better than anyone else in the field. His 16 birdies also ranked fifth among all players in the tournament, and he played the 54 holes with just six bogeys on the way to one of the best finishes of his career at Hillsdale.

While Marshall was Hillsdale's top player in the event, he was one of several great performances for the Chargers in the invitational, as all of Hillsdale's top four players finished under par.  Sophomore Parker Stalcup shot a 69-72-71=212 to finish tied for 14th in the second-best performance of his career as a Charger, thanks in part to an under-par score on Par 3s and just six total bogeys. Freshman Anthony Stouder was close behind in 20th place with a steady 72-72-70=214, and junior Jackson Piacsek placed 24th with a 71-73-71=215. 

John Cassiday rounded out Hillsdale lineup with a solid performance of his own, improving every day with a 76-74-71=221. Cassiday's under-par final round gave Hillsdale critical security as the Chargers made a big move up the leaderboard on the final day, moving from sixth to third in the team standings thanks to steady play from all five golfers.

Playing as an individual, junior Andrew Irvine also posted a collegiate-best performance for Hillsdale, shooting under par in the second round and finishing tied for 41st with a 73-70-76=219.

More than just Marshall, Hillsdale feasted on Par 4s as a team in the UIndy Invite. The Charger shot six-under on Par 4s and were the only team in the 17-team field to shoot below par on Par 4s in the event. Hillsdale's 58 birdies also tied for the second-most of any team across the three rounds.

Hillsdale's strong outing boosts their position in the region significantly, thanks to finshes above conference and Midwest region contenders. THe Chargers will be in action again next week, as Hillsdale travels to Johnstown, Pennsylvania to play in the Sunnehanna Collegiate, hosted at the Sunnehanna Country Club beginning on Monday, Sept. 28. It'll be a chance for the Chargers to see new competition, with several teams from the Atlantic, East and South Regions in attendance.
